Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been at odds with the royal family for years. Although there have been a handful of times where they have put their differences aside, those moments are few and far between, and Harry and Meghan don’t seem to be trying to win their way back in the royals’ good graces.

This year, the royal family has seen a number of unexpected health battles, namely with King Charles’ and Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnoses. And one expert says it’s actually furthered the divide between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals as opposed to closing the gap.

Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis has reportedly driven the family further apart

When Charles was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, Harry immediately flew to the United Kingdom to visit his father. It was believed that it could be the one unfortunate situation that would finally bring the whole family back together. Later, after Kate’s diagnosis was revealed in March, people were even more hopeful. But those dreams were eventually shattered as Harry’s one trip to the UK this past spring did not result in a meeting with any royal family members.

Now, one expert says things between Harry, Meghan, and the family have only become worse because there is so much less of a focus on healing the royal rift; the diagnoses have been a distraction to potentially mending the broken relationships. According to Express, Christopher Anderson told Fox News Digital that the health struggles have made it “easier” to forget about the drama with Harry and Meghan.

“The King and the Princess of Wales’ cancer battles have made it easier for both King Charles III and Prince William to put Harry out of their minds,” Anderson said. “King Charles and [Prince] William hadn’t got the time to worry about whether Harry would take more potshots at them. Harry has already gotten the message that there are consequences for his attacks on the royals; his entire family has turned its back on him.”

Could things ever change between Prince Harry and the royal family?

There is likely only one thing that could bring Harry and Meghan closer to the royals, and that’s Harry winning his appeal regarding his lack of security in the UK. Harry and Meghan won’t bring their kids to the UK unless they feel they’re adequately protected, so that is step one to getting the Sussex family across the pond. If that happens, then Harry and Meghan might start spending more time in the UK, which could ultimately lead to more opportunities to see Harry’s family.

But if that doesn’t happen, then Harry will not bring his wife and children to a place where he doesn’t feel they’re fully safe. And the lack of visits would make it difficult for the Sussexes to ever develop a true, meaningful relationship once again with Harry’s family.
