The 1 Sentence of Advice That Helped Tom Holland Quit Drinking: ‘Really Rang True’
Tom Holland may be headed to the altar (more on that later) but the Uncharted star probably won’t celebrate by popping some champagne. Holland, 28, made a personal sobriety pledge in 2022 and hasn’t had alcohol since. Ahead, his “unsettlingly difficult” journey to quit drinking and the “poignant” advice that helped him through it.
Tom Holland stopped drinking alcohol in January 2022
In a January 2025 interview with Men’s Health, Holland opened up about his decision to cut alcohol out of his life three years earlier in January 2022. He began by taking a one-month break from drinking. During that time, the Spider-Man star realized it had become a staple at the end of his work week.
“Every Friday after work was a write-off: ‘Let’s get drunk and have a good time,’” Holland said. “I didn’t have bad experiences, but I would drink enough so that I would ruin my next day.” The first month of sobriety proved “unsettlingly difficult.”
It got to the point where Holland considered having a drink after driving him and his brother to a poker night. He felt like he needed a drink to enjoy himself and asked his brother to drive home so he could have a drink.
“It was a bit of an eye-opening moment for me and for him,” Holland explained. “It’s really helpful when the people closest to you start going, ‘Are you sure?’” Later, he added another month to his sobriety pledge, until six months later when he considered breaking it for his 26th birthday party.
Realizing he had no desire to drink again, he decided to keep up his sober living lifestyle, which led him to starting Bero, a line of nonalcoholic beers. “I’m quite strong-willed. When I decide to do something, I’m really gonna do it,” he said of going sober.
Advice from his lawyer on not drinking ‘really rang true’ for Holland
Holland continued, saying he “leaned on close ones a lot” including “family, friends, old colleagues, new colleagues,” and “people that reached out that” he “didn’t know who also were sober.”
Among those to offer support was Holland’s lawyer. He wanted a drink after a particularly difficult week when his lawyer visited him in his hotel room and offered some wise words.
“He gave me a really poignant piece of advice that helped me get through everything, which was: You’ll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink,” Holland said.
That one sentence—16 words total—struck a chord with the actor. “That piece of advice really rang true to me,” he explained. “Because my problem was that I would have one drink and be fine, and then I would just go too far.”
Tom Holland and Zendaya are reportedly engaged
Thanks to a mysterious diamond ring Zendaya wore on *that* finger—her left-hand ring finger—to the Golden Globes on Jan. 5, 2025, engagement rumors started flying about her and Holland.
While talk of impending nuptials is nothing new for the actors, both 28, fans couldn’t help but speculate as to the significance of the sparkler. Was it simply one of the ways Zendaya chose to accessorize her custom Louis Vuitton gown and Bulgari jewelry for the awards show? Or was it something more meaningful from Holland?
It looks like it was the latter. Per a TMZ report, Holland proposed to Zendaya between Christmas and New Year’s. Neither Zendaya nor Holland have publicly commented on their reported engagement.
