Who Did ‘1883’ Star LaMonica Garrett Play in ‘Sons of Anarchy’?
LaMonica Garrett had a big role to tackle in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel 1883. The actor portrayed Thomas, a former slave, Buffalo Soldier, and Pinkerton agent who accompanies Shea Brennan to Oregon. 1883 fans might not realize that just like Sheridan, Garrett had a role in several seasons of the FX series Sons of Anarchy.
Taylor Sheridan acted in ‘Sons of Anarchy’
Sheridan has something in common with 1883 star LaMonica Garrett — they both acted in Sons of Anarchy. Sheridan portrayed Deputy Chief David Hale in seasons 1-3. Hale has a history with Jax and Tara, having grown up with them in the same small town.
Hale generally tries to adhere to the rules and follow his own moral compass. However, his brother Jacob briefly convinced him to work with the White separatist group, the League of American Nationals in season 2. Hale is desperate to get SAMCRO out of Charming, but he eventually helps them take down L.O.A.N. During a shooting at Half Sack’s wake in season 3, a truck ran over and killed Hale while he fired back at the attackers.
‘1883’ star LaMonica Garrett played Deputy Sheriff Cane in ‘Sons of Anarchy’
1883 star LaMonica Garrett looks considerably different in the Yellowstone prequel than he did in Sons of Anarchy. Garrett rocks a bald head, clean-shaven face, and a police uniform in SOA. In 1883, he has hair and a full beard. Thomas usually wears a cowboy hat and his gear from the Civil War.
Garrett’s time on Sons of Anarchy did not overlap with Sheridan’s. He first appeared in Sons of Anarchy in the season 4 premiere. His character, Deputy Sheriff Cane worked under the command of Lieutenant Eli Roosevelt. His partner was Deputy Martinez.
Cane isn’t a fan of SAMCRO. He has a run-in with the group almost immediately when they purposely drive too slowly in front of his police car. Cane tries to run the Son’s bikes out of his way, earning him the reprimand of Roosevelt. He is a recurring character in seasons 4-7 until he gets shot and killed by a white supremacist in the episode “Poor Little Lambs.”
Will LaMonica Garrett return for more ‘1883’ episodes?
1883 has been renewed for additional episodes, though they won’t constitute a second season. Last fans saw of Thomas, he managed to reach the Willamette Valley with Noemi and her sons. Although Garrett hinted to KTLA 5 Morning News that he would be more than willing to return to 1883, Sheridan may have other things in mind for the character.
“I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn’t,” Sheridan told Deadline. “I’d rather you imagine it, and wonder what Thomas and Noemi made of their lives.”
