‘Yellowstone’ Prequel ‘1932’ Was Originally Supposed to Be Season 2 of ‘1883’
ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS
- Following the success of Yellowstone prequel 1883, Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+ announced 1932.
- 1932 would follow another generation of the Dutton family during the Great Depression and Prohibition.
- But the original plan was for 1932 to be season 2 of 1883.
1932 was just announced as the latest Yellowstone prequel from Taylor Sheridan and streamer Paramount+. But this is a brand-new development, according to executive producer David Glasser.
The original plan was for the story of the next Dutton generation to be season 2 of the prequel 1883. But thanks to the success of Sheridan’s Yellowstone-universe, they scrapped the original plan for a bigger, better idea.
‘1932’ takes place during the Great Depression and Prohibition
As the series title indicates, the latest Yellowstone prequel will take place in the early 20th century. According to the description, 1932 will follow another Dutton generation “during the time of western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.”
Sheridan says he chose that time period for a specific reason. In a video announcing the new series, the writer/director said he is focusing on that decade in American history because “you’re seeing the children we’ve met in 1883 now attempting to raise another generation of Duttons at a time of the Wild West becoming a playground for the elite from the east.”
This connection between the two Yellowstone prequels — the children from 1883 as adults in 1932 — makes sense because EP David Glasser says that the new prequel was originally supposed to be season 2 of 1883.
The new ‘Yellowstone’ prequel was originally season 2 of ‘1883’
According to Glasser, 1883 is now considered a limited series instead of a show that could get renewed every year for new seasons. Paramount+ has announced that there will be a few “additional episodes” of 1883 that will air later this year ahead of the premiere of 1932. But then that’s it for the prequel starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton.
“I don’t want to give away too much, but 1932 was always intended to be the second season,” Glasser revealed to The Hollywood Reporter. “Now the network is excited to bring you something really additional to 1883, which is super exciting. There was one way set with it — there was one version — and now there’s going to be two versions.”
In addition to the 10 episodes of 1883, Yellowstone fans also got a glimpse of James and Margaret via flashbacks to the year 1893 during season 4. And they appeared to be the parents of two boys. One of those boys would be John as a teenager, who was played by Audie Rick in 1883 when the character was just five years old.
Who will be the star of ‘1932’?
Fans now know why Elsa (Isabel May) was not part of those flashbacks. But what’s not clear is who the younger boy was, and how those two boys will be a part of 1932. All of the signs point to the focus of the new prequel being a grown-up John Dutton after fans saw him as a little boy in 1883.
No casting announcements have been made yet. But, fans can be confident that a name will be revealed soon enough. And chances are, it will be a big name. Sheridan has major A-listers attached to all of his other projects, not to mention the huge stars of Yellowstone and 1883.
Fans will also get to see the new prequel 1932 before the year is over. The series is being fast-tracked just like 1883, and will be introduced on the Paramount Network during part two of Yellowstone season 5. Then, the series will move exclusively to Paramount+.
1883 the limited series is now playing on Paramount+.
