24 Years After First Emmy Win, Gillian Anderson Could Take Home Another Trophy for ‘The Crown’

Gillian Anderson received an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy nomination for her role as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Crown.' Anderson is considered a favorite to win the award. If she does score a victory, it'll come 24 years after her first Emmy win.

Gillian Anderson is no stranger to TV. The actor is best known as Dana Scully on the popular Fox series The X-Files. Now Anderson is gaining more attention for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher on The Crown. Anderson has gained new legions of fans, and accolades thanks to the Netflix show. With her 2021 Emmy nomination, Anderson could be adding another trophy to her mantle.

Gillian Anderson won an Emmy for ‘The X-Files’

With three decades in the business, Anderson’s been the recipient of numerous award nominations. During her nine years as Fox Mulder’s (David Duchovny) skeptical partner, Anderson won a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

From 1996 to 1999, Anderson was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy. In 1997, Anderson won the award beating out strong contenders such Julianna Margulies and Christine Lahti. Aside from The X-Files, Anderson was also nominated for the 2006 BBC miniseries Bleak House.

Season four of The Crown would be the show’s biggest. The storylines consisted of Prince Charles’ (Josh O’Connor) marriage to Princess Diana (Emma Corrin). Although Charles and Diana’s marriage was a central focus, The Crown also delved into Thatcher’s struggles as Prime Minister and complicated relationship with Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman).

Anderson had big shoes to fill taking on the role of Thatcher. Although her performance received mixed reactions from The Crown fans, it was praised by TV critics. According to The Independent, Anderson’s portrayal was described as “extraordinary in making an often vilified historical figure feel like a real human being.”

Anderson’s work on The Crown has snagged her a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. Now, she has the chance to complete the trifecta with an Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

The success of The Crown’s fourth season earned it 24 Emmy nominations. Many critics and fans predict a big night for the show. According to TVInsider.com, Anderson is the clear favorite to win the Supporting Actress Emmy.

But Anderson faces tough competition with seven other nominees, including The Crown co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fenell. So will Anderson win her second Emmy two decades after her first win? Or could there be a surprise winner in the Supporting Actress category?
