Kristen Johnston has remained busy throughout her acting career, from supporting parts to a starring role on a popular sitcom. Johnston has 56 acting credits to her name, IMDb reports. You might know her from a small but hilarious appearance as a villain in the secret-agent parody Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Other movies she’s appeared in include The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas, Music and Lyrics, and Bride Wars. She’s also had supporting or guest parts in the following TV shows:

  • The Mayor
  • Trip Tank
  • The New Adventures of Old Christine
  • Modern Family
  • Kim Possible
  • Bored to Death
  • Puppy Love
  • The Larry Sanders Show
  • Hearts Afire

Johnston boasts a diverse array of parts on her résumé. Though she’s clearly shown a talent for comedy, she can also handle meatier, more serious roles when the situation calls for it. But her most famous role was on a mid-’90s sitcom that became a surprise hit.

Her most notable roles

Though Johnston has starred in many projects throughout her career, she’s best known for her performance as Sally Solomon on the NBC sitcom 3rd Rock From the Sun. The story follows four aliens who come to Earth and disguise themselves as humans.

The show capitalized on the fish-out-of-water element, highlighting the group’s reactions to many aspects of Earth’s culture. The series became wildly popular, lasting six seasons as part of NBC’s “Must See TV” lineup in an era that included comedy heavyweights such as Seinfeld, Friends, and Frasier.

Johnston starred on that show alongside other talented actors John Lithgow, French Stewart, Jane Curtin, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In an interview with CBS Watch Magazine, Johnston talked about how fortunate she was to land a starring part on 3rd Rock

“I’ve been so lucky because I’m a weird person to cast. I have a specific look, and I’m not right for everything. So the fact that 3rd Rock was so perfect for me and happened when I was in my 20s was just one of those crazy, miraculous things. And it’s happened in bigger and smaller ways later in my career where the role and project met up so perfectly.”

Johnston has remained active throughout the years, but 3rd Rock From the Sun put her on the map. It has led to many other roles where she’s been able to show off her comedic and dramatic chops as a seasoned actor.

Johnston’s long, illustrious career has paid off if reports of her fortune are accurate. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Johnston is worth a reported $14 million. That’s a hefty sum, but in light of her career achievements, it’s not surprising.

Typically, when an actor appears in a sitcom that reaches syndication, they receive royalties. 3rd Rock From the Sun aired for six years, qualifying it for syndication. It’s still in reruns to this day. Of course, she’s hardly coasting off of that success. Johnston is also still actively working. She has played the character of Tammy in the CBS sitcom Mom since it debuted in 2018.
