5 Serious Movie Scenes Viewers Can’t Help but Laugh At
Some people have found it very hard to keep a straight face when watching serious scenes in movies. Moment deemed too funny to be serious include those from the classic ’00s romantic drama Titanic, the meme-worthy War Z, and the big-budget franchise-starter Divergent. And that’s just the beginning.
‘Titanic’ (1997)
Sailing on her first journey, the unsinkable ship sunk. But this film was primarily about a romance between a high-class young woman and a down-on-his-luck man who won a ticket to cruise in a poker game. In the end, Rose opts for a new life, taking her (now deceased) lover’s name to live her life as she wishes.
At the film’s climax, the ship began to sink, and people were sliding down the dock. Several Reddit users found this amusing. One commented that “a couple of them hit the railing and plunge in a spinning motion to their death. I’m sure this wasn’t meant to be funny…”.
Another user earned a glare from a friend with their comment in the theater back when the blockbuster debuted. “I leaned over and whispered that [the people] looked like Plinko chips. She turned to me, tears streaming down her face, and said that there was a time and place for everything, and this was neither the time nor the place!”
‘Final Destination’ (2000)
Watching Final Destination can make you think about all that’s dangerous around you. It can also make you believe in a higher power that controls death, especially how and when we die. The ’00s thriller certainly scared a lot of viewers into contemplating their fate, but not everyone found it scary.
“I don’t think the first one was intended to be funny, but I laughed my ass off,” wrote one user of the horror franchise. “The sequels embraced the ridiculousness, but I think the first one was supposed to be serious.”
Others found specific deaths humorous and unbelievable. “My friend and I watched it in the theater and when the girl got hit by the bus, we busted out laughing,” wrote another. “No regrets were had. To this day, I still laugh.”
‘World War Z’ (2013)
This cliffhanger movie centers around a viral outbreak turning people into zombies. Main character Gerry searches around the world for the key to the vaccine. Eventually, the team learns the zombies don’t like already infected humans and leave them alone. This provides them enough time to start developing the vaccine they need.
The above scene, where Brad Pitt’s character encounters one of the zombies, made several Redditors crack up. “My sister and I were in the theater and we both started laughing,” wrote one. “Then [the] guy who was on a date behind us started to laugh.”
“Funnily enough, that’s sort of become a running joke between my wife and I,” added another.” Whenever there’s a prolonged silence between us, I’ll start doing that teeth-chatter and it always elicits a chuckle.”
‘Taken’ (2008)
Lying to your parents is never a good thing, especially if your dad is a hostage negotiator (and all-around badass). Liam Neeson’s beloved franchise may focus on his character saving his daughter from a sex-trafficking circle, but not everyone could take one scene entirely seriously.
“I saw Taken at a theater in Baltimore and this lady started laughing during the electrocution torture scene,” wrote a Reddit user. “Her laughter grew until it was over the top scream laughing when he throws the switch and walks out. So awkward.”
‘Divergent’ (2014)
Not every dystopian future movie translates perfectly. Shailene Woodley may have earned her place in Hollywood starring in the franchise, but many found it cringeworthy, to say the least. “My god, that movie is just so dumb,” wrote one Reddit user. I had to try as hard as I could to not laugh.”
Despite the heartbreak it brought Tris, one user bashed the moment when her dad died in a shootout. “The way it’s filmed makes it seem like he just died for the sake of dying,” they wrote.
