Mother’s Day is fast approaching, which means most families will be logging some serious quality time together. And during this era of social distancing, most people will be staying inside on the holiday. That could be an ideal time to binge a few cool flicks. Some moms like romantic comedies and dramas, while others like mysteries and action films. But for moms who enjoy thrills and chills of scary movies, here’s a list of mom-themed horror films, especially for them.

There is no shortage of scary movies with moms at the center. Whether she is the final girl, a source of comfort, or even the villain, it’s clear that mothers rule in horror movies. 1. ‘The Babadook’ (2014)

In The Babadook, a woman named Amelia and her son read a bedtime story that opens a door to paranoia and terror. Has the creature depicted in the book manifested in their reality, or has the terrified mother, imagined it all? The lead actress, Essie Davis, plays Amelia’s descent into madness beautifully. By the end, the unhinged mother becomes just as frightening as the Babadook, himself.

2. ‘Carrie’ (1976)

From the mind of Stephen King, Carrie tells the story of an ordinary girl with extraordinary abilities. Carrie, portrayed by Sissy Spacek, endures extreme emotional abuse from her devout mother, played by Margaret White, throughout the film. After being bullied by her classmates and battered by her mother, Carrie snaps and turns prom night into a slaughter. She crucifies her mother with knives and burns their humble abode to the ground.

3. ‘The Conjuring’ (2013)

In The Conjuring, Carolyn, a mother of five daughters, becomes possessed. The evil spirit that takes over her body is Bathsheba, a witch who sacrificed her baby to the Devil, and then, died by suicide. Over the course of the film, Carolyn’s family witnesses her physical and emotional transformation at the hands of Bathsheba. The film culminates with a terrifying exorcism by a duo of daring demonologists.

4. ‘Mama’ (2013)

In Mama, two young children are found living in isolation in the woods. Upon their rescue, they go to live with their uncle and his significant other. But in the years the children were away, a maternal spirit had been protecting them in the forest. When that entity follows them to their new home, terror and violence ensue.
