Things have really changed for Prince Harry since he and Meghan Markle decided to step down as working royals and move to the U.S. The once-beloved royal became extremely unpopular in his homeland when he decided to air out his family’s dirty laundry in a prime-time special with Oprah Winfrey, as well as during several other interviews and podcasts, a Netflix docuseries, and in his memoir Spare.

In the process, he very well may have completely destroyed his relationship with his brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton). Now, someone who knows and used to work for the Duke of Sussex says that Harry has to be asking himself one question every single day.

The question Prince Harry’s former aide says the duke must be asking himself now

The Duke of Sussex knew what his future would be like and what identity he had as a working royal. But since quitting that life, he’s still trying to figure out what his new identity and path is. Some people who used to work for the prince spoke to The Times about how it seems like Harry has found himself at a “crossroads.”

According to one former adviser to the duke, Harry’s constant need to bring up the past and gripe with his family time and time again makes it appear that he can’t move forward.

They said: “All he does is spend time looking back. If only he could wrench his neck around and look forward.”

And one of his former aides told the publication that the duke must wake up every day and ask himself these five words: “What is Prince Harry’s purpose?”

The former staffer opined that Harry has to ask himself that key unanswered question, insisting: “’What is the purpose of Prince Harry’ and ‘What is Prince Harry’s purpose?’ He loved the army and was very good at his job. The work with Invictus is great and fatherhood was the role he most wanted, so perhaps those are enough for him. But everything else is a bit woolly. I always thought he wanted more from life. I can’t help but think he must [also] be wondering, ‘Where do I go from here?’”

The Sussexes always wanted to remain working royals but only half the time

If Harry is asking himself that question and hasn’t had an easy time after stepping down in 2020 that may be because he still wanted to be a royal, at least half the time. However, as many recall, the late queen did not accept the Sussexes’ half-in, half-out proposal.

A close friend of Harry’s explained: “One of the primary reasons for them leaving the U.K. was the institutional and media issues they felt they faced, so for that they must feel vindicated. But did he get what he wanted? No. The perfect scenario was to get what they originally asked for — ‘We’d like to move and still be semi-royals.’”
