’90 Day Fiancé: Asuelu Pulaa’s Attempts to Financially Support His Mother Has Fans Angry for Kalani Faagata
Asuelu Pulaa and Kalani Faagata just got their relationship back on track in the fifth season of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? after having a massive fight during a trip to California. But already, there’s more drama kicking up.
Asuelu has been keen on sending money to his mother, but with them already struggling financially, Kalani has refused him. The topic came up again on the Aug. 2 episode and fans are just as annoyed about it as Kalani appeared to be.
Asuelu’s mother has asked them for money
In the July 26 episode, Asuelu’s mother asked her son to bring $1,000 with him on a planned visit to her home in Washington. He explained to Kalani that it’s customary in Samoan culture for a child to support their families. But Kalani felt it was just too much money to casually give away — especially because they’re already struggling.
Despite her reluctance to send the money, Kalani was open to sending gifts to his family. “I think that’s a really sweet gesture and showing that we’re thinking of them but also not breaking the bank,” she said in a confessional.
But when they got to a local market, Asuelu started grabbing loads of items. When Kalani urged him to “tone it down,” they got into a disagreement over how much to spend.
Not only did Asuelu want to cash out on gifts, but he also said he still wanted to give his mother the $1,000 in hopes that it would bring his family closer together.
“That’s not going to work,” Kalani said, noting that it’s “an unrealistic amount of money to give to people especially when you work part-time” and that money isn’t the answer to make his family closer.
After much back-and-forth, they agreed to give his family $100.
Fans react to the disagreement between Asuelu Pulaa and Kalani Faagata
While many people understand Asuelu and the desire to give back to one’s family, a lot of viewers sided with Kalani in her argument that they have their own family to support.
“I’m with Kalani on this money issue. THEIR home and kids come first,” read one tweet. “He doesn’t make enough to take care of that household so he sure as hell shouldn’t be financing another one! If what he can afford to give isn’t enough for the mom, take it back.”
“I’m all for helping family overseas, within reason but Asuelu honey, your immediate family needs to come first. Diapers and formula ain’t cheap,” read another tweet.
A third person agreed, writing: “Asuelu, your family consists of Kalani and the boys. That is who you take care of before ANYONE ELSE.”
But on the flip side, there were others who didn’t feel so bad for Kalani.
“Kalani complains about everything Asuelu does,” read another tweet. “… bet she wasnt thinkin that when she took advantage of him and got knocked up… They both have issues.”
Agreeing, someone else said, “It’s hard to feel bad for her tbh.”
In the Aug. 9 episode, Asuelu and Kalani headed to meet Asuelu’s family, so we’ll see whether they were satisfied with what the couple supplied then. Watch 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? at 8 p.m. ET on Sundays on TLC.
