’90 Day Fiancé’ Fans Think Debbie and Colt Johnson Are Codependent
90 Day Fiancé star Colt Johnson always has at least one woman in his life — his mother. While he may have struck out with Larissa Dos Santos Lima, the TLC reality star is back on the latest season of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. And so is Mother Debbie, Johnson’s very involved live-in mother. And when it comes to Johnson’s dating life, no woman has more say than Mother Debbie. Now, with Johnson hoping to make things work with Jess Caroline, Debbie seems to have last say once again. The twosome’s behavior has some fans thinking they might be codependent.
Colt Johnson explains why he’s so close with Debbie
Fans of 90 Day Fiancé are familiar with Mother Debbie and her behavior when it comes to Colt Johnson’s love life. Debbie has exhibited plenty of controlling behavior, and often seems grouchy and unapproachable.
Within hours of arriving in Brazil with Johnson and Jess Caroline, Debbie started making a scene. Johnson told producers, “I knew going into Brazil that my mother being there could jeopardize my relationship with Jess. And now she’s slamming doors, she’s yelling. And she’s just doing the same sh*t she did with Larissa.”
Later, Johnson explained to Caroline that he’d lost his father to a heart attack. He told producers, “Losing a parent really affects you. Suddenly, you don’t have that person you love anymore. You don’t have their experience and wisdom. And there’s a hole in your heart. You’ll never get another father or another mother. You have to live your life without that guidance, without that person watching over you.”
Johnson told Caroline, “I didn’t ask to take care of my mother. I didn’t want that burden. But she’s my mother, and she needs me. And maybe she’s not the best person, but she’s my person.”
Debbie doesn’t plan to stop meddling
Colt Johnson’s mother claims to want the best for her son, but she seems dead set on controlling his love life. Mother Debbie was a big influence on Johnson’s relationship with 90 Day Fiancé star Larissa Dos Santos Lima, and not a positive one.
Now, Debbie suspects that Jess Caroline is trying to pressure Johnson into marriage and a child. She told producers, “I think she might be trying to force him into believing he really wants to settle down and get married and have kids,” Debbie admitted. “I think Jess might want to get pregnant so that she can get a green card and become a citizen and live happily ever after.”
During a chat with producers, Debbie said, “Everyone’s gonna be saying, ‘For god’s sake lady let him live his life.’” Debbie then laughed before adding, “No!”
‘90 Day Fiancé’ fans aren’t sure about their relationship
90 Day Fiancé fans have never been particularly fond of Debbie and her relationship with Colt Johnson. Many seem put off by it, and some have suggested that the two share a codependent relationship.
Scott Wetzler, chief of psychology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine describes a codependent relationship as being based on a lack of autonomy. As reported by WebMD, “Codependent relationships signify a degree of unhealthy clinginess, where one person doesn’t have self-sufficiency or autonomy.”
One Redditor wrote, “And to top it off she asked Colt if he would end the relationship with Jess if SHE felt Jess wasn’t the one. (I forget her exact words ). Just way too overbearing.”
“It’s really no wonder why Colt turned out so codependent. He really needs to establish healthier boundaries with his mom. Time to cut the cord,” wrote another user.
One commenter suggested Debbie is lonely. They added, “Very disturbing!! You have to let your kids live life. She’s lonely and needy, wonder if she’d drop [Colt] like a hot potato if she met someone.”
