’90 Day Fiance’: Fans Think TLC Hired a Look-a-Like to Pretend to be Lana and Meet David Murphey
A catfish is usually very easy to spot, especially on 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days. If a person says that they “can’t video chat,” always has excuses as to why they can’t meet up, and asks you for money, then chances are they aren’t real. Everyone watching David Murphey this season thought his Ukrainian girlfriend Lana was tricking him. She never showed him her face over the phone and refused to meet up with him, classic catfish. But, in the shock of the season, Lana actually turned out to be a real, living, breathing girl.
But now that fans have seen Lana for real, they still think some things don’t add up.
David Murphey’s obsession with Ukrainian women
Murphey has been basically asking to get catfished for years as he has been scouring foreign dating websites for over a decade.
“When the internet was brand new a tenant of mine showed me a website where you could meet Russian and Filipino women,” Murphey wrote in a recent Instagram Q&A. “I had an interest in Russians. Within months, the Ukrainian women on the site outnumbered the Russians. I went to both countries. A few years later, Ukraine became more Western-like and you didn’t even need a visa to go there. Russia requires a visa and you have to register everywhere you go. It was just harder to travel in.”
Since then, he has only dated foreign women and claims to have dated over 100 Ukrainian women.
Lana seemed like a catfish
Lana had all of the markings of a catfish and her excuses as to why she could not meet Murphey became more and more flimsy as time went on. Murphey even hired a private investigator to find out the truth about Lana.
“I know I got a lot of lies from Lana,” Murphey told the cameras. “So I’m hoping the investigator will validate that Lana is who I think she is because I don’t know if I’m ready to find out if my truth is not the truth.”
And the investigator agreed that Lana was probably scamming him.
“He truly believes that this is scam,” Murphey’s friend Victoria translated the investigator’s findings. “Because when they checked all data and all connections, they find out this girl [has] several dating accounts.”
Lana turned out to be real
On Murphey’s fifth attempt to meet Lana, somehow she magically decided to turn up and meet him. When she spoke to the cameras, she said that she never lied to Murphey about why she couldn’t meet in the past. It was strange that after so long, Lana all of a sudden wanted to meet him.
And in the footage showing Lana’s life in Ukraine, she used both a computer and a smartphone, meaning she could have FaceTimed Murphey a long time ago.
Fans aren’t buying that Lana is who she says she is
Though TLC showed viewers a woman claiming to be Lana, not everyone is so sure that the woman on the show is the real Lana.
“How old is Lana supposed to be, because she looks like she’s in her mid to late 30’s. I thought she was in her 20’s. Anyone? #90DayFiance,” one fan tweeted.
“Even though Lana is ‘real,’ she’s still fake af,” another person wrote.
Some even thought that TLC might have paid a girl to pretend to be Lana.
“For Pete’s sake TLC how many times do we need to see David meet Lana,” one person said. “Or should I say the girl TLC hired to play Lana.”
