Michael Ilesanmi has responded to Angela Deem’s request for an annulment. The 90 Day Fiancé star denies that he tricked his estranged wife into saying “I do” and alleges that she was physically and mentally abusive during their four-year marriage.

Michael Ilesanmi accuses Angela Deem of ‘cruel treatment’

In June 2024, Angela filed a petition in Georgia’s Jeff Davis County Superior Court asking for her marriage to Michael to be annulled. She claims he “fraudulently induced” her into the relationship for the purpose of obtaining a green card.

On August 21, Michael responded to Angela’s “frivolous” request for an annulment. In documents viewed by Showbiz Cheat Sheet, he tells a very different story of their marriage. He denies he scammed Angela and says that he did not abandon their marriage when he left her home in February 2024. Instead, he “fled an abusive situation for his own safety.”

The TLC personality cited Angela’s “cruel treatment” when asking the court to grant him a divorce.

Michael says Angela abused him while filming ‘90 Day Fiancé’

Michael, who married Angela in January 2020 in a ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, says that Angela “has committed both physical and mental abuse” over the course of their marriage.

“This abuse has occurred both privately and publicly,” he says in his filing. “Some of this abuse was documented while the parties were present and filming reality television show.”

In addition to asking for his marriage to Angela to be dissolved, Michael is asking for both temporary and permanent spousal support from Angela.

“[T]here is a substantial disparity in income between the parties,” notes his petition. “[Michael] is unable to meet his reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued financial support from [Angela].”

Michael also says that he and Angela have acquired various assets during their marriage, including cash and checking accounts, stocks, furniture and cars. He wants those assets to be equitably divided in the divorce. He’s also asking that the court sanction Angela for “abusive litigation.”

’90 Day Fiancé’ Stars Rally to Support Michael Ilesanmi in Legal Battle With Angela Deem

Angela and Michael made their 90 Day Fiancé debut in 2018. After failing to obtain a K-1 fiancé visa, they had a wedding in his native Nigeria in 2020. But the COVID-19 pandemic and continued visa struggles meant that Michael did not get permission to move to the U.S. until late 2023.

Once Michael finally arrived in America, his relationship with Angela quickly broke down. After becoming convinced her husband was scamming her, she hired a PI to investigate him. The investigator found no evidence of fraud, but Angela continued to lash out at Michael, as seen on the 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Season 8 tell-all.

After Michael launched a GoFundMe to pay for the lawyer he needed to hire to respond to Angela’s annulment filing, she again accused him of being a scammer

“America wake up now you have been scammed,” she captioned the TikTok video.

“Did you see Michael made his goal? What is wrong with you, United States of America?!” she said in the minute-long clip. “I am totally ashamed right now. Who makes a GoFundMe, makes $25,000 for legal fees when we have people out there that have sick kids, sick moms or veterans on there who don’t even get $25,000. Wake up, America! This is unacceptable. This is unacceptable.”
