’90 Day Fiancé’: What’s the Deal With Mohamed and the Bidet?
90 Day Fiancé Season 9 introduced us to six new couples, and one of those couples is Yve and Mohamed. Cultural differences between the couple seem to be the issue they struggle with the most. As a practicing Muslim, Mohamed’s used to a much more conservative lifestyle for his wife, but Yvette feels as though he’s trying to control her. As a single woman in America, she’s used to a relationship that allows more freedom.
’90 Day Fiancé’ star Mohamed became annoyed with Yve for not installing a bidet for him
In the May 1 episode of 90 Day Fiancé, Mohamed finally arrived in America and reunited with Yve. The couple returned to Yve’s home in New Mexico. Yve told Mohamed she got everything done for him at the house except installing a bidet. It was mildly confusing why Mohamed had to have a bidet, but he explained the reasoning during his confessional.
“A bidet, it’s like a faucet for washing yourself after going to the toilet. It’s important to me because I practice Islam, and when you’re going to pray five tiems a day, you’re going to be facing God. So, you have to be clean, one hundred percent. Tissues for us, it’s not enough,” 90 Day Fiancé star Mohamed told producers.
He continued in an annoying tone, “I don’t know why she didn’t get this bidet works [SIC] before I come because that’s really, really important to me. I’m a little upset about that but it’s our first night together. I’m not going to let that bother me too much. But, I feel like this is example of the culture in America is completely different of what they believe in Egypt. So, my fear is that I invested in this relationship and I left my country, my family. Yve needs to make sacrifices for me as well. If she doesn’t, I think that may ruin our relationship.”
Are bidets crucial to those who practice Islam?
While 90 Day Fiancé star Mohamed acted as though a bolt of lightning would strike him if he didn’t have a bidet, it’s not the bidet itself that’s important. It’s the cleanliness aspect.
According to this Vice article, “Islam teaches that the condition of the body affects the condition of the spirit, so it’s essential to be clean at all times—especially before offering prayers—which is why lots of Muslims use lotas.”
In reality, Muslims can use anything with a stream of water in place of an actual bidet. So, it seems as though Mohamed might have overreacted.
’90 Day Fiancé’ fans feel like Mohamed’s actions are a red flag for the relationship
Several 90 Day Fiancé fans think Mohamed’s controlling nature signals a red flag in his and Yve’s relationship. We know the trailer shows he and Yve arguing over her wearing a bikini. However, his reaction to not having the bidet installed has fans rolling their eyes.
“If it’s so important to him, he can install it himself now that he’s there. That’s a fair compromise if she paid for it, but he didn’t seem to even really consider it a real option and tried to say he didn’t know how. They come with instructions,” wrote one Redditor.
Another commenter said, “Omg i have the strongest urge to slap this guy, after seeing a clip from the bidet scene. Like, WHO do you think you are. Lady has a son with problems but makes a hell of an effort for this guy to feel at home, and his reaction? B****ing about the bidet. Who cares where you wash your a**, man. I really, really dislike this dude for now.”
There are still plenty of episodes remaining in 90 Day Fiancé Season 9. Tune in on Sunday nights on TLC to watch Yve and Mohamed’s story unfold.
