’90 Day Fiancé’: What Happens When Paul Tells Karine About His Past?
In season 1 of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, Paul Staehle finally comes clean to Karine Martins about his criminal past. However, the whole situation spirals out of control and ends in Karine getting robbed by a man with a machete. Read on to learn what happens and how it all plays out.
Paul comes clean to Karine
Paul is visiting Karine and he wants to come clean about his criminal past. He sits down with her at a park and he uses a translator app to explain himself. He hands the phone to Karine and the message appears on the screen: “You need to know that I’m a convicted criminal. I’ve been in jail.”
It’s a startling situation to be in, and one that’s making Paul “nervous,” which is totally understandable. “I’m really concerned and nervous that when Karine finds out about my past, she’s gonna just walk away like all the other women did,” Paul tells the cameras.
Paul continues to explain himself to Karine. “I have a lengthy criminal record. I’ve been in jail…” Paul tells her. Karine’s initial response is, “Uhh…” just like the rest of us.
Paul goes into the details
Paul gives some surprising details about his past to producers. “I was accused of burning my own house, burning my own personal property, and spent about 18 months in jail,” he tells the cameras separately. “And then a few years ago, I was in a very terrible relationship and she took out an emergency protection order on me.”
Paul types in more of an explanation for Karine to better understand the situation. Things are more than tense, and it’s unclear how Karine will respond to the news.
“I went to jail for arson. And I had a restraining order from my ex-girlfriend,” Paul admits to Karine.
Karine’s response is priceless. “Oh my God,” Karine says while looking at the phone. “I’m sorry,” Paul tells her as he holds his head.
This isn’t how Paul was hoping things would go at all. It’s got to be embarrassing, considering he just wants Karine to know the truth and accept it.
“She doesn’t deserve damaged goods. It’s not fair to her,” Paul says. He walks off from Karine and clearly needs some space. He runs off into the woods, but he doesn’t account for Karine going after him.
Karine gets mugged by a man with a machete
Karine goes looking for Paul and tries to talk with him about things. She finds him and asks him what’s going on. The language barrier between them is making things so much worse. They rely on a translator app to communicate, even during this difficult moment.
“If you don’t want to be with me, you don’t have to,” Karine says to him. She asks for his phone to use the translator app. “What are you doing?” she asks.
“I’m no good for you. I’ve messed up all of my past relationships and I don’t want to hurt you,” Paul writes back in response. Karine says she doesn’t care. She tells him to go with her, and when he doesn’t want to, she says she hates him. She walks away and leaves him there in the woods.
After Karine leaves, a man runs up to her demanding her cell phone while he holds a machete. It’s a terrifying experience. Karine sits on the ground in utter shock.
“I just want to go home. I don’t want to be here anymore,” Karine says as she cries.
Eventually Paul and Karine get together and make up, but not before all of the drama happens first. Karine gets mugged in the process and learns the truth about Paul’s criminal past all in one evening.
