Chantel initially doesn’t tell her parents that Pedro is in the United States to get married to her. They believe he’s arrived on a student visa, but that isn’t the case. He’s in the U.S. on a K1 visa, so they have to get married within 90 days.

Chantel and Pedro break the news to Chantel’s family with only days to go before the wedding. Chantel’s father mentions that she could have said something about it long before. River, Chantel’s brother, says she lied about the whole thing. Chantel replies that she didn’t think they “would like” her decision.

From then on, there is a lot of mistrust and to top it all off, neither Chantel nor Pedro’s families seem to get along with each other, adding fuel to the fire. It leads to a lot of issues in the future and at times, it’s hard to believe the couple is still together.

A fan thinks Chantel set Pedro “up for failure” with her family by lying from the start about the relationship. Who knows how different things could have been had the truth been brought to light right away about the situation?

“What did she expect when she started lying to her family?” a Reddit user wondered. “It hasn’t been Pedro’s fault since day one. She set him up for failure and basically gave no hope to Pedro in having a solid try at a relationship with her family.”

The lie causes a lot of mistrust

Another fan thinks Chantel “made it worse” by lying to her parents about the nature of Pedro’s visa. It’s already a “sketchy” situation for some people who are unsure of the process. It was made so much worse with the lie about the K1 visa. It causes a lot of mistrust, which only strains the relationship further.

“This is what I think of every time somebody here badmouths Pedro,” a Reddit user said. “Pedro came in the door as the bad guy thanks to Chantel being afraid to tell her family the truth. Doesn’t help that the situation of a K1 visa is already lightly sketchy to people that are around the folks trying to get one. She just made it worse.”

Numerous fans believe things were only made worse with the lie in regards to Chantel and Pedro relationship. If they had been honest from the beginning, they may not have had so many problems with each other’s families and all the complications that followed.
