After watching A Million Little Things Season 3 and the beginning of 4, viewers worry that Gary Mendez (James Roday Rodriguez) is heading down the same path as Jon Dixon (Ron Livingston). Delilah Dixon’s (Stephanie Szostak) husband, Jon, died by suicide in season 1 after he took care of everyone in his life except himself.

‘A Million Little Things’ Season 3: Gary continued to take care of everyone around him

In A Million Little Things Season 3, Gary took care of Delilah’s eldest two children — Sophie (Lizzy Greene) and Danny (Chance Hurstfield). He helped Danny come out to his friends and tried to help Sophie cope with sexual assault. In the end, he sought revenge against the music teacher, Peter Benoit (Andrew Leeds), who assaulted her.

Gary gave his friend, Eddie Saville (David Giuntoli), a place to stay and offered to supervise Eddie’s visits with his son, Theo (Tristan Byon). Even with his girlfriend, Darcy (Floriana Lima), Gary went above and beyond to make her son, Liam (Mattia Castrillo), feel comfortable.

‘A Million Little Things’ Season 4: Will guilt consume Gary?

In the A Million Little Things Season 4 premiere, viewers watched as Gary returned home to his dog and washed the blood off of his hands. In a flashback later in the episode, Gary took Peter into his music studio as the teacher yelled for help. Although viewers did not see Gary physically hurt Peter, a detective in episode 2 informs him that the man is now in a coma. Fans know that Layla Gregory’s dad, Christopher (Michael Weston), helped Gary, but they do not know to what extent.

Throughout the episode, Gary continuously cracks jokes, even more than typical Gary. He warns Eddie not to let revenge take over his life. Then at the end of the episode, Gary finds out that Sophie found no satisfaction in Peter’s pain. She admits that she wanted Peter to hear her story on Maggie’s podcast, but now he might not ever.

Is Gary heading down the same path as Jon?

Fans know that Rome Howard (Romany Malco) almost died by suicide while Jon did. Now, viewers worry that Gary might follow the same path in A Million Little Things Season 4.

“I’m honestly worried for Gary,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “He reminds me exactly of my uncle. He was the glue that held people together, but in the end, it was too much and he ended his life. The slight signs I’ve noticed in all the episodes make me wonder. He’s helping everyone cope and learn to be there for their happiness, and while he chases his happiness, he manages to fall short or lose it completely.”

After watching the A Million Little Things Season 4 Episode “Family First,” other viewers worried about Gary.

“The show has been building up to him losing it over something, anything really, for three seasons, and it culminated in [the incident with Peter],” another Redditor wrote. “I don’t think he necessarily planned for it to go this far but, it’s what happened. You can’t have a character like this and not show the realistic downfalls; it would make him unbelievable.”

Hopefully, Gary’s friends stay by his side when they find out what happened or realize he’s consumed with guilt over something before it’s too late.

A Million Little Things Season 4 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC and is available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
