In A Million Little Things Season 4, viewers find out that Darcy Cooper (Floriana Lima) rekindled her romance with her ex-husband, Stephen (Derek Richardson). Gary Mendez (James Roday Rodriguez) and Darcy broke up in episode 4, “Pinocchio.” Then in episode 6, “Six Months Later,” viewers find out that Darcy is pregnant with Stephen’s baby. Although some fans still think Gary may be the father of Darcy’s baby, it looks like that window is closing. Here’s why Derek Richardson, who plays Stephen, seems so familiar in A Million Little Things.
Who is Stephen in ‘A Million Little Things’?
Although Darcy Cooper mentions Stephen’s name often in A Million Little Things, viewers never meet Derek Richardson until the Dec. 1 episode. When Gary and Darcy met in A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 16, “Change of plans,” she told Gary the brief story of her relationship with Stephen. They met when they were very young and had a son together — Liam (Mattia Castrillo). Then the couple divorced young, and the moms at Liam and Theo’s school were “ruthless.” However, Darcy and Stephen had a great co-parenting relationship after the divorce.
Why did Gary and Darcy break up?
In A Million Little Things Season 3, Darcy found out that Stephen had the opportunity at work to transfer to another location — two hours away in Lenox. Before Gary attacked Peter Benoit (Andrew Leeds), the plan was for Gary and Darcy to buy a house together in Lenox. However, after Gary told Darcy about what happened with Peter, she broke up with him. Darcy did want to risk Liam seeing Gary arrested or in jail. So, Darcy and Liam moved to Lenox without Gary. Although many viewers thought the news meant that Darcy is leaving A Million Little Things, showrunner DJ Nash said that’s not the case.

In A Million Little Things Season 4 Episode 8, “The Things We Keep Inside,” viewers finally meet Stephen. Derek Richardson began his acting career with guest roles on Law & Order and Strangers with Candy in 2000. Next, he briefly became Keri Russell’s love interest on Felicity in 2002, as Adam Davis.
According to IMDb, Richardson is well known for playing Harry Dunne (the younger version) in Dumb and Dumber: When Harry Met Lloyd. He’s also known for his 2005 roles in Hostel and Reeker. In 2006, Richardson snagged a role in Men in Trees as Patrick Bachelor. From 2012 to 2014, the actor portrayed Nolan Johnson in Anger Management for 100 episodes.
It’s unknown whether Richardson might return for another episode of A Million Little Things in the future.
