Season 2 of A Million Little Things continued the conversation between Eddie (David Giuntoli) and Katherine (Grace Park). Eddie finally came clean about his big secret. Will their marriage make it past all of this or should they give up now and save viewers the Kleenex?

Why did Eddie and Katherine split up the first time?

Stay-at-home dad, Eddie, cheated on Katherine with his (now deceased) best friend Jon’s (Ron Livingston’s wife, Delilah (Stéphanie Szostak). Even worse, Delilah becomes pregnant with his baby and, in the Season 2 premiere, delivers “Charlie.”

When Eddie confessed his affair to Katherine, the two moved towards a divorce though, neither really wanted it. By the time they decided to save it, Eddie came clean with this secret he’d kept — that Delilah’s baby is his, not Jon’s.

If this feels like a lot to take in, imagine how Katherine feels.

Katherine’s reaction to the news is as expected

Katherine took the news of Eddie’s infidelity in stride, even going so far as to help Delilah with legal matters. She remained a constant in their son, Theo’s life, and hoped to make partner in her law firm (though they wanted someone who didn’t request two hours each night to have dinner with their child).

When Eddie admitted Delilah’s baby was his, however, Katherine reacted the way any woman in her position might. She told Eddie to go to his baby, then packed a bag and left for her mother’s house.

While Eddie continued fielding questions to their sone about Katherine’s whereabouts, Katherine stayed in bed at her mother’s until she reached a decision about where to go from here.

Best friends, Gary (James Roday) and Rome (Romany Malco), drive Eddie to Katherine’s mom’s house to gage how she feels. She didn’t leave with Eddie that day.

She did come home on her own time, but it doesn’t mean she’s all in just yet.

Why Eddie and Katherine’s marriage might not survive

Katherine may have come home, and her small gestures could mean she’s willing to work through the devastating news. Eddie deserves credit for promising he wouldn’t keep anything else from her and then holding himself to that standard with news of the baby.

A Million Little Things creator, DJ Nash, gave Deadline a little bit of insight into season two, particularly about Eddie and Katherine’s future, explaining the moment Eddie knew what he had to do to reconcile.

“The thing about it is, the thing he is telling her is stuff from the past,” he said. “It’s not like he just got someone pregnant. So there is an impossible situation that we’re putting Katherine in.”

Nash continued his thoughts about Eddie and Katherine going into season 2, saying he struggled with “being true to the women who would never want Katherine to take Eddie back and being true to the fans that would love to see them reconcile,” he told TV Line.

He continued: “After the journey of bringing them closer and closer together all last season, it seemed even too heartbreaking for me to have that end there. So the question was: How do we keep Katherine’s authenticity?”

He added that Katherine leaving showed Eddie how badly he hurt her — because she’d normally not leave her son like that. He acknowledged it was a “controversial move,” which was “built around us wanting to make sure Eddie suffers.”

The decision was made because fans felt Eddie never “paid the price for what he did last season.”

All of that said, even if Eddie is remorseful, and even if Katherine wants to try and work through it for Theo’s sake, it’s hard to say if she’ll ever get past knowing Eddie fathered Delilah’s baby and being OK with it.

With Katherine’s strong sense of self, work ethic, and motherly devotion, she could give the marriage a chance (with great hesitancy which could become an obstacle), or walk away knowing it couldn’t have healed the want she’d want it to. Either way, it’ll be a tough one to recover from.

A Million Little Things airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. EST on ABC
