‘Abbott Elementary’ cast includes Janelle James as the principal
The cast for the mockumentary includes Quinta Brunson, who also created the sitcom, as a second-grade teacher, Janine Teagues.
Self-described as an optimist, Janine genuinely wants to help her students but must find the line between caring too much. She admires no-nonsense kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, portrayed by Sheryl Lee Ralph, who has taught for decades and has a heart for her kids and colleagues, despite her stern demeanor.
Jacob Hill stars as Chris Perfetti, an eager history teacher who enjoys his job but lacks backbone, which leads him to become a punching bag for his class. The other second-grade teacher, Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), lives in South Philadelphia and is described as “sketchy” by Chris. Regardless, she doesn’t hesitate to ask her “connections” to help her colleagues.
Janelle James portrays the unqualified principal Ava Coleman, who admittedly earned her job through blackmail. Although she misuses the funds and tends to take advantage of her position, the principal seemingly cares about her school. Substitute teacher Gregory Eddie, played by Tyler James Williams, joins Abbott Elementary toward the beginning of the season. However, signs point to him becoming permanent as the students have taken a liking to him. Finally, William Stanford Davis portrays the apathetic and Boys 2 Men-loving custodian, Mr. Johnson.
The ABC sitcom revolves around teachers working in an underfunded public school
Abbott Elementary features teachers working in an underfunded and understaffed public school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Viewers are introduced to the group when the inept but at times well-intentioned principal Ava Coleman landed Abbott a spot in a documentary about schools that lacked sufficient funds.
The mockumentary focuses on the public education system and the outnumbered teachers set on helping their students thrive despite their less-than-ideal circumstances.
