Fans have been waiting for new music from Adele for years. The star recently released “Easy on Me” as the first single from her upcoming album, 30. Of course, Adele’s smooth and powerful vocals have made the song a hit, but it’s the pointed lyrics that have kept fans talking about it. The song is a clear ode to her experience divorcing her ex-husband Simon Konecki. Here are all the things Adele said about her divorce in the single.

What does Adele say about ‘Easy on Me’?

Before the release of the song, Adele explained its meaning.

“It’s not like anyone’s having a go at me,” Adele told British Vogue. “But it’s like, I left the marriage. Be kind to me as well. It was the first song I wrote for the album and then I didn’t write anything else for six months after because I was like, ‘OK, well, I’ve said it all.'”

She wrote the song and others on the album to explain to her son, Angelo, why she had to go through with the divorce.

“I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his 20s or 30s, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness,” she told the outlet.

Which ‘Easy on Me’ lyrics point to her divorce?

“Easy on Me” spends no time beating around the bush. The song opens with lyrics that lay out what led to Adele’s divorce.

“There ain’t no gold in this river,” she sings. “That I’ve been washing my hands in forever. I know there is hope in these waters. But I can’t bring myself to swim. When I am drowning in this silence. Baby, let me in. “

The lyrics are reminiscent of the reasoning Adele gave to Vogue for why she left the relationship.

“It just wasn’t… It just wasn’t right for me anymore,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. I wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first. But, yeah, nothing bad happened or anything like that.”

In the chorus, Adele sings about how young she was when she entered the relationship.

“Go easy on me, baby,” she sings. “I was still a child. Didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me. Had no time to choose what I chose to do. So go easy on me.”

But perhaps the most obvious lyric comes when Adele sings about putting her son and husband first for so many years.

“You can’t deny how hard I have tried,” she croons. “I changed who I was to put you both first.
But now I give up.”

In interviews, Adele has spoken about how she had to put herself first when she decided to file for divorce. The song is both a celebration and explanation of that moment — and her being absolutely unapologetic about it.
