Adam DeVine Has Gone Public With His Dad’s Lung Cancer Diagnosis: ‘We Really Got Lucky’
Comedy actors like Adam Devine and his crew of Blake Anderson, Kyle Newacheck, and Anders Holm are among the many celebrities that made it big on TV (big and small) and turned to podcasts to keep it going. In fact, there are a ton of celebrities who have turned to podcasts to stay relevant.
On their latest episode of This Is Important, the group got more serious after a few “Best of:” episodes to cover Devine’s break after getting news about his father’s cancer diagnosis. The Workaholic star took to episode 34 to go public about the experience.
Who Adam Devine is and his career
Devine is most widely known for his Workaholics role, but he is also known for being in Modern Family, Pitch Perfect, When We First Met, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. As for his most recent role, Devine’s latest movie, Extinct, premiers in 2021.
In even bigger news, the comedian has also asked Pretty Little Liars actress Chloe Bridges to marry him in late 2020.
Finding out his dad had lung cancer
Although Devine has yet to explore the exact time he and his family found out about his dad’s cancer (sometime in late April 2021), he does discuss how much of a shock it was since his dad stopped smoking for at least seven years and has stopped multiple times before then. Even more so since it was only discovered because he lost his voice.
Devine says he’s in a good hospital, though; he convinced his dad to move from the Ozarks to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston – ranked No. 1 in cancer research – because the healthcare was better.
The best part is his dad wore a tee-shirt that said, ‘Houston, we’ve got a problem,” on his first day in. Devine adds, “His voice is all f*cked up now. It sounds absolutely insane… he sounds worse than he feels.”
They got really lucky by the placement of the cancer
The Workaholics star also talked about how lucky they were despite the diagnosis.
“[My father] just recently gained 20 pounds, and I’m like, ‘This is great.’ He got a little fat all of a sudden … He’s recently put on like 20 pounds, but it’s good because he just got the cancer,” Devine says. “He got the cancer, and the doctor’s pumped on the little extra pudge … You usually end up losing a lot of weight when you’re — ’cause you’re sick, and you don’t want to eat, or you can’t physically eat because of the chemo and the radiation”
“We really got lucky. I don’t know… Usually with lung cancer you don’t find it until it’s too late. So we got lucky in the fact that his voice went out. It has to be in a certain lymph node. They said it’s like the fourth lymph node in your neck, and there’s a bunch of them there. Give or take a sh*t ton,” Devine continues. “It pressed on a nerve, and then his voice went out. And they were like, ‘That’s the only way we would’ve checked his lungs right now.'”
When asked, “So the cancer was literally on his nerves?” Devine joked, “His cancer was on his last nerve. [laughs]”
It’s nice to see that things are going well so far, and Adam Devine can lighten the mood despite what’s going on — after all, there doesn’t seem to be a topic Devine isn’t able to bring laughter to. We wish nothing but the best for Devine, his father, and his family and can’t wait to see what else is in store for him in the coming years.
