Adam Driver Revealed His Unexpected Key Ingredient to Success
Actor Adam Driver is best known for playing Adam Sackler in HBO’s Girls as well as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars franchise. He has won a lot of awards so far and seems to be having an enviable career in the entertainment industry.
There’s no doubt that many people out there would love to know the secret to Driver’s success. After all, he did not have such an easy path to Hollywood. Read on below to learn about what Driver has to say about being successful at his job and life in general.
Adam Driver had a rough early life
When Driver looks back on his childhood, he often described himself as a “misfit.” At age seven, he moved to a small town in Indiana and grew up causing a lot of trouble with his friends.
He recalled to M Magazine: “We would climb radio towers, set things on fire. We tried to set a tire on fire. That was really hard.”
Driver also ended up starting a fight club in high school, where he and a group of other teenagers would fight each other as well as anyone who crossed their path.
“They had a big grassy field behind f***in’ Celebrations Unlimited, an event space that people rent out to get married or whatever,” Driver told Rolling Stone. “We would go out there in the middle of the night and beat the s**t out of our neighbors.”
After Driver graduated from high school, he did not really have a direction in life. He ended up taking on a series of odd jobs, such as selling vacuums and being a telemarketer.
Things took a turn for Driver after the September 11 attacks. He decided to join the marines to serve his country. It turns out that Driver had a good experience in the military, which he was a part of for about two years.
However, he accidentally got injured while riding a mountain-bike and was soon medically discharged. Since Driver could not be deployed with the rest of his unit, he went back to Indiana and enrolled in college. It didn’t take long before he decided to go to Juilliard to study drama.
Adam Driver found success in acting in 2012
Driver graduated from Juilliard in 2009 and started working as an actor in New York City. He was able to appear in a few movies and shows, though his roles were quite small at the time.
Things changed for Driver in 2012 when he was cast as Adam Sackler in Girls. The role brought Driver a lot of recognition, especially after he became a series regular. Driver ended up earning himself three Emmy nominations for his work in Girls.
In 2016, Driver joined the Star Wars franchise as Kylo Ren, which elevated his career even more. Kylo Ren became one of the most famous faces in the Star Wars films, and the role no doubt made Driver a Hollywood star.
Adam Driver says that ‘doubt’ is his key ingredient to success
When looking back at his many accomplishments, Driver believes that having doubt is important in finding and maintaining success.
“Doubt is part of being committed to something,” he said. “I feel that with religion. I feel that with acting. I feel that with marriage. I feel that with being a parent. I’m constantly filled with doubt, regardless of what I’ve accomplished … You still don’t know anything really.”
It seems that, for Driver, doubt allows him to learn more about the things in his life instead of being comfortable with what he thinks he already understands.
It’s definitely an unusual way of looking at the world, but having doubt seems to have worked out well for Driver. Not only is his acting career thriving — he starred in four movies in 2019 alone — but his personal life looks quite good as well.
He has been married to actress Joanne Tucker since 2013, which is impressive since Hollywood is known for its short-lasting relationships. The couple has one son together.
