‘Alan Wake 2’: Remedy Entertainment Teases a ‘Pretty Scary Experience’
It’s happening again … Remedy Entertainment has officially announced another Alan Wake adventure. And this time, it’s even scarier. Alan Wake creator Sam Lake appeared at The Game Awards 2021 with a mysterious and horrifying video game reveal trailer, announcing a tentative 2023 release date. Here’s what we learned about Alan Wake 2 so far.
‘Alan Wake 2’ made its debut at The Game Awards 2021
The brief, cinematic trailer, seen below, showed scenes of a forest surrounded by caution tape, as well as a rainy day in the streets of a small town. The camera slowly zoomed in on the protagonist, the titular Alan Wake, as he held a flashlight high in the air. Suddenly, the screen went black before a zombie-like version of Alan jumped out.
“We all come to a story with hopes and expectations, looking for an answer,” his voiceover said. “Sometimes, it would be better to live with that hope without ever finding the story. This is not the story you want it to be … this story will eat you alive. This story is a monster. And monsters wear many faces.”
Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t offer any hints at what fans could expect from the story. However, that jump scare at the end could certainly be the first of many.
Sam Lake teased Remedy Entertainment’s 1st survival horror game
After the trailer, Lake explained that Alan Wake 2 would be Remedy Entertainment’s first venture into the survival horror genre. The original Alan Wake did have survival horror elements, but it was classified as an adventure game. Remedy is apparently planning to fully lean into the horror part, as Lake teased a “pretty scary experience.”
“It’s no secret that we have passionately pursued an opportunity to return to Alan Wake’s story for years. All that hard work has brought us here. The stars have aligned. It’s happening now, and we know the community is as passionate as we are about seeing Alan Wake’s next chapter unfold,” Lake said in a press release. “Alan Wake 2 is our first ever survival horror game, a genre that lets us dive deeper than ever before into building an intense atmosphere and a twisted, layered, psychological story.”
During the show, Lake warned that Remedy Entertainment would “go dark” for quite some time in order to work on the game. However, he said the studio aims to have more to share by summer 2022. Alan Wake 2 currently has a 2023 release window.
‘Alan Wake Remastered’ launched in October
The news of Alan Wake 2 comes just a few months after Remedy released Alan Wake Remastered. The updated version of the studio’s 2010 hit followed the titular writer on a vacation with his wife, Alice, in the small town of Bright Falls, Washington. Alice hoped that Alan could work on his next novel, but when she suddenly went missing, sinister things began to happen. Dark monsters from a novel Alan never remembered writing started terrorizing him in his quest to find his wife.
