Who Is Alanis Morissette Married To?
Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette became a household name in the ’90s with her iconic album Jagged Little Pill. The record spawned several hits including “Ironic,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “Head Over Feet,” “You Learn,” and “You Oughta Know.”
In 1995, Morissette won four Grammys for Jagged Little Pill including Album of the Year. Three years later, she took home two more Grammys for her single “Uninvited.” Morissette has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and holds the record for the most songs topping the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart among all female artists.
While she poured her heart and feelings out in her lyrics back then, fans don’t know a ton about Morissette’s life today. Well, she has found happiness with her husband and two children. Here’s more about Morissette’s family and the age-old question fans have been asking for decades: Who is “You Oughta Know” really about?
Morissette’s husband is in the music business as well
Morissette is married to Mario Treadway, better known by his stage name Souleye. The pair met at a meditation retreat in California in 2009. They tied the knot the following year on May 22, 2010, in an intimate ceremony at their Los Angeles home.
Souleye is a hip-hop artist who has released a dozen albums and even recorded some music with his wife.
During an interview on “Super Soul Sunday” in 2014, Morissette spoke about her past romances and how Souleye was different sharing: “I would date people, and there would be something about me that would hit a brick wall with whomever I was sitting across from. And with Souleye, when I first met him, I could see that there was this limitlessness to where we could go.”
Today, the couple has three children together. They welcomed their first son, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, on Dec. 25, 2010. Their second child, a daughter named Onyx Solace Morissette-Treadway arrived in 2016, followed by their third child, a son Winter Mercy Morissette-Treadway, in 2019.
Who ‘You Oughta Know’ is about
One name that always comes up as the person “You Oughta Know” could be about is Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on Full House and its reboot Fuller House. He dated Morissette for two years before the song came out.
When asked about that the actor told BuzzFeed “It’s just really funny” and how it’s an “urban legend” that Morissette is referring to him and their relationship in the song.
However, he did previously admit that after hearing “You Oughta Know” for the first time even he thought it might be about him, telling the Calgary Herald: “I said, ‘Wow, this girl is angry.’ And then I said, ‘Oh man, I think it’s Alanis. I listened to the song and I said, ‘I think I have really hurt this person.’”
Coulier then shared that he contacted Morissette to see if that was the case explaining: “I asked Alanis, ‘I’m getting calls by the media and they want to know who this guy is.’ And she said, ‘Well, you know it could be a bunch of people. But you can say whatever you want.’”
Morissette has never publicly revealed who actually inspired the breakup anthem of the ’90s. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen she said that six people have “taken credit” for being the subject of that song saying: “I am intrigued at the thought–or at the fact–that more than one person has taken credit for it. I’m thinking, I don’t know if you want to take credit for being the person I wrote ‘You Oughta Know’ about.”
