Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Reveals Why ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Was So Special To Her When She Was Bartending
She’s got plenty of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez finally joined RuPaul on the judge’s panel for season 12 of this reality competition series.
This representative has been a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race even before she was walking the halls of congress.

Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Nicki Minaj each had their chance on the RuPaul’s Drag Race judges panel. During season 12 of this reality competition series, though, one episode featured U.S. Representative Ocasio-Cortez.
This guest judge shared her runway and rusical critiques, even going backstage during RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked to chat with the contestants. As a fan of the series, this was a big moment for both the performers and the congresswoman.

Like several other celebrity judges, Ocasio-Cortez had a chance to go backstage and chat with the queens. She shared that she’s been a longtime fan, and getting to spill tea on the couches was a dream of hers.
“Last year, I was bartending in a restaurant — that was my life last February,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Every night, I would come home, and the only thing that would help me disconnect and unplug was watching Drag Race.”
Even before season 12, this congresswoman was sharing her love for the RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants. When Nina West, Miss Congeniality of season 11, was eliminated, she posted an Instagram story sharing her support for the queen. Ocasio-Cortez even went to one of Sasha Velour’s drag performances.

With the congresswoman hanging out backstage, some of the drag performers had the chance to share personal stories. One of the contestants, Jackie Cox, told Ocasio-Cortez of her mother who faced discrimination after moving to the United States from Iran.
“I do have to say, it is crazy to meet you,” Jackie Cox said to AOC. “Seeing you working in Congress in solidarity with Congresswoman Tlaib and Congresswoman Omar gives me so much hope for our country…”
“But we all do it, in our own way,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “People think Congress and government is all about leading people, but ultimately, a lot of our politics is about following the public will. And the people who change what people think are artists — and drag queens! And let’s not forget who threw that first brick at Stonewall. It starts with you. I mean, you are patriots. I’m so proud of you all.”
