TL;DR:
- ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2 is coming to Netflix in December 2022.
- Netflix announced 10 cast members for the new season, including Kento Yamazaki, Tao Tsuchiya, and Riisa Naka.
- The cast and crew recently wrapped production on ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2
Alice in Borderland is one of the most popular Japanese shows on Netflix. Alice in Borderland premiered on Netflix in Dec. 10, 2020. Netflix quickly renewed the hit series for season 2. Since then, fans have been waiting patiently for the second season to be released. Netflix finally confirmed when new episodes of the series will be released on the streaming service.
‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2 premieres in December 2022
Fans won’t have to wait too much longer to watch the new episodes of the series, which is based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso. In a new video, Netflix confirmed Alice in Borderland Season 2 premieres in December 2022, two years after the first season was released.
Unfortunately, Netflix did not share the official release date for the new season of the series. Netflix should announce the Alice in Borderland Season 2 release date much closer to the end of the year.
Two years seems like a long time between new seasons of Alice in Borderland, especially with Netflix renewing the series for a second season two weeks after the premiere of the first season. Considering how long production takes for a show like Alice in Borderland and the production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it makes sense why it took the cast and crew so long to make the second season.
Production on season 2 wrapped in the spring of 2022, according to Netflix.
‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2 cast announced
In April 2022, Netflix also confirmed the Alice in Borderland Season 2 cast.
Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya are back for season 2, along with Nijiro Murakami, Ayaka Miyoshi, Dori Sakurada, Aya Asahina, Yutaro Watanabe, Tsuyoshi Abe, Sho Aoyagi, and Riisa Naka.
Several members of the cast were asked how they felt about finishing season 2 in the video that Netflix shared.
“We had these really large-scale scenes every day, and the world of the show is bigger than ever,” Yamazaki said. “I enjoyed filming the show very much and look forward to the final production. Since it’s been several years since the first season, it’s quite emotional for me.”
Aoyagi added, “The first season was great, but the second season takes it further. I think the audience will enjoy it a lot.”
Netflix is expected to announce the rest of the Alice in Borderland Season 2 cast closer to the release date.
‘Alice in Borderland’ benefits from ‘Squid Game’ popularity
It will be interesting to see just how popular Alice in Borderland Season 2 is when it hits Netflix later this year. Thanks to the popularity of the Korean series Squid Game, which premiered on Netflix in September 2021, Netflix saw a boost in viewership of Alice in Borderland.
Netflix’s Michael Smith said the company saw a “sizable uptick in global viewing” for Alice in Borderland after viewers tuned in for Squid Game, according to a report from Variety.
Variety reported the streaming network also cross-promoted Alice in Borderland following the success of Squid Game, which is now Netflix’s most popular series of all time.
Fans will get to see Alice in Borderland Season 2 long before Squid Game Season 2 hits Netflix, though. According to Variety, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he’s hoping to have the new season on Netflix by the end of 2024.
