The First Wives Club premiered 24 years ago. And, placing Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn on one screen was such a memorable affair that New Republic Pictures has decided to unite them once more — for a new comedy.

Remembering ‘The First Wives Club’

In The First Wives Club, the above trio played women wronged by their husbands. When one of their college girlfriends (Stockard Channing) jumps from her penthouse balcony, the three women are reunited at her funeral. They soon realize that they’re all struggling to cope with lifeless marriages and inconsiderate spouses.

The fact that their friend jumped from her penthouse following a divorce and her husband’s marriage to a younger woman was the catalyst. The old friends soon become partners in crime, and they make a pact to get back at their husbands once and for all. Hilarity, unpredictability, vindictiveness, spite, and friendship all come together in this romantic dramedy.

Bette Midler was in a role built for her: sincerity bubbles underneath a quick tongue, a little bit of sass, and a humorous shtick. Diane Keaton is timid but ready to shoot, and Goldie Hawn (an actress aging in showbiz) knows how to play in the big leagues…but never misses a cocktail. Here’s to hoping Family Jewels capitalizes on the dynamics and the characterizations that worked previously, while also striving for originality. Balancing homage to The First Wives Club fans, while also ensuring an inventive new narrative will be pivotal.

As Variety notes, New Republic Principals Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer will produce the upcoming movie. The movie will focus on three women who are forced to spend Christmas together after the man they were all once married to dies in a department store.

While the movie will center on the three characters portrayed by Hawn, Midler, and Keaton, their children and grandchildren will also have pivotal roles in the upcoming comedy. In talking about the movie, Fischer explained:

The chemistry of Diane, Bette and Goldie is unmatched and irresistible, and I’m thrilled to help reunite them on screen for generations of fans

Oliver is also hyped about the upcoming movie, and he explained why the film works with the company’s goals for the next few years. He stated:

This movie fits perfectly in our plan to finance and produce four to six major studio theatricals a year and puts movie stars back where they ought to be – on the big screen

Fans of The First Wives Club are destined to race to the theater when this movie eventually premieres, as Hawn, Midler, and Keaton all know how to draw a crowd individually. Imagine what they will be capable of together (with memories of The First Wives Club behind them to boot).
