All ‘Super Mario’ Villains Confirmed to Join Jack Black’s “Monstrous” Bowser
The internet’s focus zeroed in on Chris Pratt’s casting as Nintendo’s red plumber. However, the user overlooked some important details. The Super Mario villains, lead by Jack Black as Bowser received mentions in September’s Nintendo Direct, and could hint at problems Mario and Luigi face.
Bowser and his army of minions storm the ‘Super Mario’ movie
Could it really be a Mario movie without the biggest and baddest of all Super Mario villains?
Announced by Shigeru Miyamoto during a Nintendo Direct, he said he expected a “monstrous performance” from Jack Black.
While Bowser occasionally takes breaks to play tennis or go-karting with the plumber, he always ends up the villain again and again. Whether he resorts back to kidnapping Princess Peach (Emmy-nominated Anya Taylor-Joy) or has new plans up his sleeve is still to be seen.
However, Bowser will not act alone in terrorizing Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom.
Bowser’s Magikoopa minion Kamek is set to appear as well
Koopa Troopas are one of the most common Super Mario villains in the games. However, there are various subspecies as well, such as the winged Paratroopa and the sorcery-wielding Magikoopas.
Bowser’s right-hand man is a powerful, old Magikoopa called Kamek. The sorcerer wears a light blue robe and touts a magic wand. And he received a casting as well.
Kevin Michael Richardson voiced baddies before. He voiced the evil Trigon from the Teen Titans series and the animated Joker in The Batman. More recently, he provided voices in Netflix’s Invincible.
While Kamek joins Bowsers ranks, it seems that his magic mischief will cause plenty of problems for Mario and Luigi.
However, three characters, in particular, may or may not serve as Super Mario villains, depending on the film’s plot.
Could Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong be ‘Super Mario‘ villains?
When comedian Sebastian Maniscalco leaked that he played a character called Spike, fans rushed to assume that he meant the green Koopa who spits up spiked balls to throw. However, he mentioned that he served as Mario and Luigi’s “boss.”
The “boss” comment lead fans to speculate that a very obscure character called Foreman Spike could appear instead. This was confirmed by the icon next to Maniscalco in the Nintendo Direct.
Fans connected a few dots. Foreman Spike was a construction worker in the games. When Mario first debuted in the arcade Donkey Kong, the mustachioed Italian worked as a construction man.
Donkey Kong received a voice actor in Seth Rogen. Could this mean that Mario and Luigi would fight Donkey Kong among the other Super Mario villains?
Until Nintendo reveals more details, the answer remains hazy.
Illumination could look to recreate the classic ‘jumping barrels’ scene, though according to official Nintendo sources, the Donkey King in the original arcade games actually became Cranky Kong.
Cranky Kong will be voiced by Fred Armisen in the Super Mario movie, so fans could see a younger Cranky Kong tossing barrels at the plumbers.
However, very little information remains available on the Mario movie. At least audiences saw a release date for North America, Dec. 21, 2022.
While the date sits more than a year away, the Super Mario villains sit and bide their time to strike.
