‘Altered Carbon’: Was the Netflix Series Renewed for Season 3?
Altered Carbon is back for season 2, and this time around, Anthony Mackie is stepping in as the new sleeve for Takeshi Kovacs. The show continues to tell Kovacs’ story, as he fights the powers that be while searching for his lover in a futuristic world where consciousness lives on forever. There’s much more of Kovacs story to be told, which is why fans are wondering if Altered Carbon was renewed for season 3.
What is ‘Altered Carbon’?
Netflix’s sci-fi series, Altered Carbon, is a futuristic story based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name. The show takes place in a dystopian universe where human consciousness is stored in spinal disks called “stacks.” Powerful and wealthy people can afford to upload their stacks to new “sleeves” (bodies) when they get sick, injured, or die.
Takeshi Kovacs is an elite mercenary who was once part of a group called the Envoys who were charged with keeping different factions in line. The Envoys were destroyed 250 years ago, and as one of the few remaining, Kovacs must change sleeves for survival.
What happens in season 2
Season 2 of Altered Carbon picks up with Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) 30 years after the season 1 ending. In an effort to find his lost love, Quellcrest Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Kovacs travels back to his home planet, a place called Harlan’s World.
In his homeworld, Kovacs discovers someone illegally copied his stack and put it into a clone of his birth sleeve. He ends up facing the former version of himself (Will Yun Lee), finds Quellcrest, and must fight the forces that are trying to destroy them
Will there be a season 3 of ‘Altered Carbon’?
As of now, Netflix hasn’t announced plans for a third season of Altered Carbon. But that doesn’t mean the streamer won’t renew it in the future. However, fans can take comfort in knowing that showrunner Alison Schapker and creator Laeta Kalogridis already have ideas in place if the series is renewed.
“When I came on board, Laeta Kalogridis was already mapping out season two,” Schapker said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The idea was that this was going to be an anthology series but one that also had extensive continuity and rewarded viewers on a season by season basis as far as Takeshi Kovacs’ journey — The goal of Altered Carbon is every season serves a new mystery and a new sleeve and a new planet.”

When will we know if ‘Altered Carbon’ was renewed or canceled?
Netflix renewed Altered Carbon for season 2 six months after the series premiered. So fans should keep their eyes peeled in the coming months to see what the streamer decides. However, if Altered Carbon season 2 does well in terms of viewership and buzz, there’s a good chance it will return for another season.
