How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan has been very candid about her feelings towards the show. And when it came to its series finale, she shared similar thoughts about it that many of its fans did.

Not everyone was all that pleased about the How I Met Your Mother series finale. The series built up towards the show’s lead, Josh Radnor’s Ted Mosby, ending up with the mother of his kids in the future. It took nine seasons for Ted to find the lover he’d start his family with. But there were some fans of the show who didn’t like how the series wrapped up.

Hannigan was one of the cast members who was a bit disappointed by the show’s ending. She wasn’t a fan of the relationship pairings at the end of the show. And she also felt the long-awaited conclusion might’ve been a bit rushed.

“It just seemed too quick,” Hannigan once told News.com.au. “Obviously it was a tear-jerker, but with all the stuff that got cut out it was too fast … like ‘OK, now we’re going to find out the mum’s dead, then suddenly, OK — he’s with Robin now’, and you’re just like, ‘wait, what happened?!'”

“There was a funeral scene [that got cut], and all this stuff that I think the audience needed,” she continued. “They needed that time to process that information, instead of having it slap them in the face.”

Her co-star, Josh Radnor, had a much different take on the finale than she did, however. Radnor believed that most people were upset with the finale because they’d end up missing the show.

“Anger is an easier emotion than grief,” Radnor said. “People were more comfortable being angry than sad. They were sad their favorite show was ending and they were sad it didn’t end the way they wanted it to. Rather than sit with the feelings of sadness or loss—which is what [creators] Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas] were asking people to sit with… not everyone was up for that.”

Throughout the course of the series, there were many theories that floated around about Ted’s future wife. One such theory was that the wife was actually dead in the future. In a resurfaced interview with Time, Hannigan took that theory a bit further.

“We could all be dead,” Hannigan said. “Who knows? But I just love that even though it’s only [two] episodes left, people are still trying to figure out the end. As Barney would say, wait for it!

Hannigan also touched on why the ninth and final season of the show might’ve been the strangest of the series.

“You know, I think I did most of my grieving at the end of the season because now I feel like, ‘Oh, that was great!’ This ninth season was shot around so many different schedules, and it was such a weird season that it was almost like our methadone. It was a nice way of getting used to not seeing everyone every day of the week. So it prepared us for the finality of it all,” she said.

Both fans and the cast weren’t told who the mother was on the show until the final season. But a major hint of the mother’s true identity came when Hannigan had to take a picture with the mother during season 9.

“I knew something was up because I was called in to the make-up trailer to take a picture with an actress — and when I got there, the door was locked. In nine seasons, the door had never once been locked,” Hannigan said.
