Anything can happen on live television, especially wardrobe malfunctions. Ryan Seacrest has hosted ‘American Idol’ for 20 years — and he’s had a few mishaps

American Idol has evolved quite a bit since its first season in 2002. The show has changed formats, adjusted age requirements, swapped judges, and even moved between networks. However, one aspect has never changed: Ryan Seacrest as the competition’s host.

With the end of American Idol’s latest season, Seacrest has now crowned 20 winners. He has met hundreds of contestants and worked with countless famous musicians. Of course, in 20 seasons, Seacrest has also experienced a few mishaps. Longtime fans may remember the time wrestler Hulk Hogan threw Seacrest off the stage (which, surprisingly, became one of Seacrest’s favorite Idol moments). And a few years ago, sleep deprivation caused Seacrest to slur his speech on stage.

Ryan Seacrest shared the embarrassing reason he had to change his underwear during the recent ‘American Idol’ finale

Thankfully, Seacrest never had anything too embarrassing happen to him on American Idol … until now. On Monday morning’s episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan, the television personality opened up about a wardrobe malfunction during the Idol finale. Seacrest explained that the original pair of underwear he wore beneath his suit showed off a little too much.

“Apparently, America voted and said there was anatomy in the shot,” he joked.

Seacrest said his stylist, Miles Siggins, pulled him aside during a commercial break to tell him he needed to change his underwear. However, the Idol host didn’t have an extra pair on-hand. So Seacrest did something that completely horrified his Live With Kelly and Ryan co-host Kelly Ripa — he swapped underwear with Siggins.

“He says, ‘Don’t worry, I got mine,'” Seacrest added. “He’s English, so he has shorter, tighter ones. … They were tight, elastic underwear.”

While the incident was embarrassing for Seacrest, he said he was happy to do “anything for American Idol.”

“It was in the middle of a live show! We go backstage during the commercial and find a little corner, and I’m literally taking off my pants, off my underwear, and putting his on,” he continued. “It was the first for me for a live show. … It’s a family show. Thank you, Miles!”
