Amina Buddafly Equates Her Toxic Marriage to Peter Gunz to an Addiction
Love & Hip Hop is infamous for chronicling unhealthy relationships. None were quite as entangled as the one between Amina Buddafly and Peter Gunz. The two met and married while Gunz was living with another woman, Tara Wallace, whom he was with for 13 years at the time. The love triangle played out over four seasons, with both women becoming pregnant at the same time. But Buddafly has since moved on and the two are now divorced. In hindsight, she says she was addicted to her relationship with Gunz.
Amina Buddafly says her relationship with Peter Gunz was an addiction
As Gunz maneuvered between Wallace and Buddafly, both women blamed each other and suffered long-term heartache. Still, neither were able to fully break free of the situation. Looking back, Buddafly says she was stuck and addicted to Gunz. The scrutiny from viewers of the show over their storyline didn’t help either.
“I always thought I knew my worth and I’m better than this and I don’t deserve this, but it’s literally like – that’s why I hate when people called me dumb. What was dumb about that? I was just stuck, I was addicted, I needed help,” she said in an Instagram live. “It’s just like somebody that’s addicted to something else, you need rehab. That’s really what I needed. That doesn’t make me dumb, that makes me an addict, and that’s how I look at it.”
She also says she didn’t have the tools at the time to walk away and it took a constant cycle of hurt for her to find the strength in her worst moment to finally leave. “In my mind, I knew I deserved someone who doesn’t hurt me like this but the struggle was really walking away,” she said. “It’s so easy for people to say ‘You’re stupid for staying with him’…I know it’s not good for me and people would always say move on from him but they wouldn’t tell me how and that’s where therapy came in.”
She says moving to another state and therapy helped her to break free of her relationship with Peter Gunz
Buddafly says that as more time went on and the situation worsened, she knew with every new hurt from Gunz that she was getting closer to leaving. According to Buddfaly, she cried daily, was constantly anxious over Gunz’s whereabouts, and she says her daughter began to take notice. She says her 1-year-old daughter, who couldn’t speak at the time, wiped away her tears one day and that was her motivating factor to leave.
In a 2020 interview with Showbiz, Buddafly reflected on the day she finally left. She explained:
The next day, I called the moving company and arranged everything and two weeks later I was on the plane. I went to LA previously and looked at places but nothing was set in stone. I had to hit rock bottom and know things were irreparable between Peter and me before leaving. I was unsure on the plane as I traveled from New York to Cali but I knew I had to do it. It was the hardest decision but it was the best decision.
Buddafly also enrolled in therapy. In the Instagram live, she admitted that she remained intimate with Gunz for two years while still trying to break away from him. But with constant therapy and the time apart from him, she was able to do so fully. Now, the two are friends and co-parent their two daughters. She’s even blended her family with Wallace and her three sons.
