‘And Just Like That…’ Season 2 to Have a Time Jump
After a transformative first season, viewers are eager to see what happens next on And Just Like That…. When the TV show left off, everyone was making big decisions either professionally or personally: Carrie Bradshaw was starting to step outside of her comfort zone with dating and work, Miranda Hobbes had turned down a major internship to spend the summer with her new love Che Diaz, and Charlotte York began to hit her stride in parenting teenagers (finally!!!).
And Just Like That… Season 2 is coming to show how those storylines work out. However, it won’t be picking up from exactly where the first one ended.
‘And Just Like That…’ Season 2 is officially in the works
What’s wild is that And Just Like That… was supposed to be a limited series. But it was such a hit for HBO that it was hard not to do another season. And Just Like That… Season 2 was officially announced in March, on the heels of the season 1 finale.
“We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much,” HBO Max original content boss Sarah Aubrey said at the time. “[HBO is] proud of the work [showrunner] Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast, and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season 2!”
Now, King has offered an update on And Just Like That… Season 2. Speaking to Variety, he shared that the writers’ room has just opened up. But even though it’s still in the early stages, he does know that there will be a slight time jump — three weeks to be exact.
What to expect next season
When it comes to the details, King didn’t comment other than to say that viewers would get to see the results of the seeds planted in the show’s first season. “The first season was judging a book by its cover, and Season 2 is about reading the book,” he teased.
Of all the characters, many viewers are especially wondering about what will happen between Miranda and Che. Their relationship was one of the most polarizing parts of the first season as Miranda left her marriage to Steve Brady to be with Che, with much backlash directed at the latter. But King isn’t backing away from that. In fact, he said he hopes to show more of them next season.
“One of my burning passions about Season 2 is Che,” King shared. “I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason — because they were blinded, out of fear or terror. I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.”
As far as Carrie and Charlotte, King didn’t discuss them in the interview. But based on where the show left them, it’s safe to assume that Carrie will be dating and working on new projects, while Charlotte continues to navigate her life as a wife and mother of two.
Will Kim Cattrall be in season 2 of ‘And Just Like That…’?
Some viewers have also been hoping for the return of Samantha Jones, who was shipped off to England in the first season as a result of Kim Cattrall’s decision not to reprise her role.
When Sarah Jessica Parker — who has feuded with Cattrall in the past — was asked if she would be OK with Cattrall returning to the franchise, she suggested she wouldn’t. “I don’t think I would,” Parker told Variety. “Because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared.”
Cattrall hadn’t heard about Parker’s comments until Variety mentioned them to her in an interview. But she said she was fine with that because she had already decided to retire the character.
“Well, it would never happen anyway,” Cattrall said. “So nobody has to worry about that.”
That puts the kibosh on her possible return, but at least Carrie and Samantha are still texting buddies on the show. Maybe there will be more interactions like that in its next season.
