Marvel’s new Disney+ series Loki is now available for streaming. Starring Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, the series dives deeper into the story of the title character and is set directly after the events of Avengers: Endgame

Even though Loki was recently released, the show began development back in 2018, around the time Avengers: Infinity War came out. Interestingly, Marvel’s creative team was having a hard time getting ideas flowing for Loki during the initial stages of production, and they required a little help from Hiddleston. This led to Hiddleston leading what is now known as the “Loki lecture,” educating the Marvel staff about everything Loki.

Recently, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan caught up with Hiddleston and they shared their disappointment in Hiddleston not inviting them to attend the lecture, as both of their shows were filmed in the same production lot.

Mackie and Stan jokingly shared their displeasure with Hiddleston during a recent interview with Variety

“We were not invited,” Stan said.

“We were not invited. Let us say, me and Sebastian were on the lot, and we were not invited. … Everybody was talking about it,” Mackie said. “Tom Hiddleston gave a six-hour symposium about Loki. And we were not invited!”

According to Mackie, the production crew intentionally kept him and Stan from going to Hiddleston’s Loki lecture.

“Sebastian and I, they made us work,” Mackie said. “They scheduled one of our biggest scenes, so we could not sneak out and crash the Tom Hiddleston symposium.”

Tom Hiddleston didn’t understand how there could be a Loki show after he died in ‘Infinity War’

Hiddleston, who was also in the interview with Mackie and Stan, later explained the process behind getting the show on the air. He noted that Marvel executives initially approached him about Loki back in 2018 when Infinity War was about to hit theaters.

“Initially when Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito called me about this they were very excited, and it was around the spring of 2018, which was when Infinity War was being released into the world,” Hiddleston said. “And they said, ‘Disney are going to create this streaming platform they have, and we’re very excited to present ideas to them, and Loki is one of them in amongst WandaVision [and] Falcon and the Winter Soldier.'”

Hiddleston was on board with the idea from the jump, but he wasn’t sure how they’d be able to pull it off, given the fact that Loki dies in the first three minutes of Infinity War

“The opening three minutes of that film felt extremely final,” Hiddleston said.

When the time came to start working on Loki, Marvel’s creative team had a ton of questions for Hiddleston. Before long, Hiddleston decided he’d be better off answering all of the questions at once, which led to the Loki lecture. However, given the amount of attention he’s received from the gesture, he kind of wishes he hadn’t done it.

“I was fielding lots of questions from the production team. … I said to Kate Herron, our director, ‘Would it be helpful if I gave everybody all the information at the same time?’ And Kate and Kevin Wright, our producer, was like, ‘That’s a brilliant idea.’ … It then became a kind of Loki lecture. I’m crushed with shame and embarrassment that this thing has even happened and is now out in the world.”
