Are ‘Gilmore Girls’ Alum, Sean Gunn, and Famed Director, James Gunn, Related?
Sean Gunn is famous for portraying Kirk Gleason on Gilmore Girls, but he is slated to take on a much different role soon. Gunn will play Weasel in the upcoming movie, The Suicide Squad. Fans can’t help but notice that Gunn shares a last name with the director of the upcoming comic book flick. So, are Sean Gunn and James Gunn related? Absolutely.
James Gunn and Sean Gunn are brothers
Sean and James don’t just share a last name; they are actually brothers. James, who is eight years older than Sean, is best known for his direction and writing. James has 33 writing credits and 16 directing credits, according to IMDb. Sean, on the other hand, has amassed more than 50 acting credits. His first acting job came in 1996, but Kirk Gleason in Gilmore Girls, is largely considered his breakout role.
Sean and James are actually from a rather large family, and they aren’t the only ones in the entertainment business. They are the youngest and eldest of six children, respectively. The family’s only daughter, Beth Gunn, is an attorney, according to LinkedIn. Patrick Gunn served as an executive vice president at Artisan Entertainment.

While fans were quick to notice that Sean landed a role in The Suicide Squad, it’s actually not the first time he’s worked with his older brother. Sean appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In both films, Sean took on the role of Kraglin. James directed both movies.
Aside from The Suicide Squad, Sean is also slated to reprise his role as Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released sometime in 2021. The film was put on hold when Disney fired James. According to Digital Spy, James was fired for offensive comments he had made in the past. He was eventually rehired, but the movie was pushed out of Marvel’s Phase 4 because of the shakeup.
Several of the Gunn siblings are in the entertainment business
Sean and James aren’t the only Gunn siblings who work in Hollywood. Their brother, Matt Gunn, is a political writer and actor. Matt spent much of his career as a writer for Real Time with Bill Maher. He also wrote, produced, and starred in the short film, Man About Town. The short premiered at The Sundance Film Festival in 1997.
Brian Gunn is a writer, producer, and actor, too. According to IMDb, he has been linked to a variety of TV shows. His most recent credit is as a writer and executive producer on the upcoming Starsky and Hutch TV series. James is also attached to the project.
