Are Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds Best Friends?
How does one celebrate best friend’s day? Well, if you are Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, you do it by completely burning said best friend on social media — that way the whole world knows just how strong your friendship is.
Reynolds and Gyllenhaal have had one of the most hilarious bromances over the past few years. They’ve laughed, they’ve gushed, and they’ve become one of Hollywood’s strongest friendships. But are they best friends?
Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds bonded during the filming of ‘Life’
Reynolds and Gyllenhaal both started their careers in Hollywood in 1991. Though they knew each other in passing, the two never worked together until just recently. In 2017, Reynolds and Gyllenhaal starred in the sci-fi movie Life.
The film didn’t do too great, but the two actors seemed to form a lasting friendship during the filming. While promoting Life, Gyllenhaal and Reynolds did several press interviews together and most ended as hilarious love fests between the actors. Even when the two weren’t together, they were singing each other’s praise in their solo interviews.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show, the Brokeback Mountain star talked about Life and detailed the dramatic scenes being chased by aliens. But despite the seriousness of the film, the two actors just couldn’t stop laughing. Gyllenhaal told host Jimmy Fallon that the pair’s antics got so bad that production had to take the two aside and tell them just how much their shenanigans were costing the movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal penned a “love letter” to his friend last year
Over a year after Life was released, Variety asked Gyllenhaal to write a letter to his BFF. The actor obliged and poured his heart out, writing that against his wishes, the two became close friends. He wrote, “he struck me immediately as quick and warm and thoughtful, a gentleman in an era of foppish putzes, the unlikely love child of Mel Brooks and Dorothy Parker and Gary Cooper.”
Gyllenhaal went on to praise Reynolds for his role in Deadpool, writing: “After years of waiting and struggling to fit his unfortunate, pear-shaped physique into the skinny jeans of a conventional romantic lead, Ryan made his own luck with ‘Deadpool.'”
He added that though Reynolds’ success in the movie may have shocked the execs, for those that loved Reynolds, it was no surprise. The actor ended the letter writing, “…but as good a writer and comedian as Ryan is, he is a better friend and father and husband. And that, for me, is the true mark of power.”
While obviously a joke, the letter speaks to the pair’s relationship. They have mutual respect for each other, but obviously, they have the most fun when they are making jabs at one another.
Are Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal best friends?
Weeks after the Instagram trolling, Gyllenhaal continued the ruse of a feud when he appeared at the premiere for Spiderman: Far From Home. When asked what it would take to for him to be BFFs with Reynolds, the actor responded: “In truth, there was a time in which we were. As everybody knows, Instagram had its way with our friendship.”
When asked whether he had any word for Reynolds, Gyllenhaal responded simply: “I have nothing to say to him.”
It’s obvious that things between Reynolds and Gyllenhaal are as strong as they have ever been. Their continuous trolling shows that they share a closeness of brothers. Are they best friends? They’ve certainly alluded to it in the past and we’re not buying this whole “falling out” story.
