Are Kansas City Chiefs Superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce Friends Off the Football Field?
Travis Kelce was thrilled after Patrick Mahomes guided the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl berth in 50 years. Mahomes led the way for the Chiefs with three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown, and Kelce showered praises on his quarterback after the game. But are Mahomes and Kelce friends off the football field?
Travis Kelce professes his love for the Kansas City Chiefs QB
Mahomes enjoyed a stellar performance against the Tennessee Titans and gave the Chiefs their first appearance in the championship game since Super Bowl IV.
Kelce was clearly in the celebrating mood after the game and cut in on Mahomes’ post-game chat in a big way.
“This is the best quarterback in the National Football League right here, baby,” Kelce told the cameras. “And he shows it every time! Humble as can be. I f****** love you!”
Patrick Mahomes was an incredible 23 for 35 in passing attempts and threw for close to 300 yards. He also became the first quarterback in Kansas City Chiefs history to pass for multiple touchdowns and have one rushing touchdown in a playoff game.
The Chiefs will now face a difficult opponent in the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Green Bay Packers to advance to the Super Bowl. But if Mahomes can replicate his performance against the Titans, the Chiefs should be in good shape.
While it is great to see the chemistry between Kelce and Mahomes on the field, there is evidence to suggest that the two are just as good of friends away from work.
Inside Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s friendship off the field
Given the way Kelce reacted to Mahomes’ performance in the AFC Championship game, it is clear that the two are very tight. When it comes to their friendship off the field, Mahomes and Kelce are closer than most fans might suspect.
According to The Kansas City Star, Mahomes and Kelce spent a lot of time together in the 2019 offseason. The two made an appearance at the Final Four and the Stanley Cup Final before enjoying a getaway in Turks and Caicos together.
By the time the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp rolled around last summer, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were thrilled to be working together once again.
A clip from training camp shows the moment Mahomes realized Kelce was on the field. The video shows Mahomes sneaking up on Kelce and jumping on his back before giving him a quick handshake.
Apparently, the two had not gotten tired of each other in the offseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs superstars share a unique bond
Mahomes and Kelce are so close, the quarterback knows what his tight end is going to do even before he does.
During the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff game against the Houston Texans, Mahomes and Kelce put the entire team on their backs and helped mount an epic comeback in the second quarter. By the end of the game, Kelce had accumulated 10 catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
After one of their touchdowns, Kelce approached Patrick Mahomes on the sideline and expressed his wonder at how Mahomes can tell what he is going to do in a given play.
“I don’t understand how you know what I’m doing and s**t,” Kelce said.
“I knew you would turn,” Mahomes replied, to which Kelce responded, “There is nothing telling you I was going to do that. And the ball was in the air before I did it.”
We don’t know how, but Mahomes and Kelce share a bond that the NFL hasn’t seen since Peyton Manning’s days with Dallas Clark — which should worry their opponents to no end.
Patrick Mahomes to sign a major contract
After a successful college at Texas Tech, the Chiefs drafted Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 draft. Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs late in the 2018 season after the team traded Alex Smith.
In his first full season as the starting quarterback, Mahomes was named the NFL MVP, becoming the first Kansas City Chiefs player to nab the award in the history of the franchise.
No matter what happens in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs are expected to agree to a major contract extension with Mahomes that could be worth $200 million.
If the Chiefs are able to secure Mahomes for the long term, then his friendship with Kelce will likely only grow stronger. Kelce is not set to become a free agent until 2022, so the pair has at least two more years together.
In the meantime, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have one more task in front of them: the chance to give the Kansas City Chiefs their first Super Bowl win in 50 years.
