Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Going to Relinquish Their Royal Titles?
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are still lying low, waiting out the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the rest of the world. Still, rumors continue to run rampant regarding their future plans, their relationship with Prince Harry’s family, and the drama happening with Meghan’s father and sister. The most buzzworthy story regarding the couple is the one suggesting that they are about to formally relinquish their royal titles, nearly a year after they stepped down as senior royals — and a recent report sheds some light on the possibility.
The royal exit that made headlines
Prince Harry and Meghan were often cited as the new hope for the royal family, following their 2018 marriage. Many believed that they would inject some modernity into the very traditional royal family, and that they would work hard on furthering the humanitarian causes so beloved by Prince Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.
Still, Meghan’s ongoing problems with the press, combined with Prince Harry’s desire to be seen as his own man, meant that they were destined for other things.
In January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan announced that they would be stepping down as senior members of the royal family. Their Instagram post, which shocked millions of people, stated that they intended to launch their own charity and work on other projects close to their hearts.
In short order, the couple moved to California and began a whole new life, far away from Prince Harry’s home country.
There were rumors that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be stripped of their titles
Prince Harry and Meghan didn’t openly speak out about many of the circumstances of their exit, so the public was left to speculate. For weeks, there was a persistent rumor that the couple would be formally stripped of their royal titles by an irate Queen Elizabeth.
This rumor was seemingly supported by the fact that there was some outrage from the British public surrounding Meghan and Prince Harry’s resignation.
Still, even though the queen certainly has the right to take away their royal titles, there has been no indication from the palace that the monarch will do such a thing. Rather, she has been supportive of Prince Harry and Meghan and worked with them to create an exit agreement that would allow them to retain their titles, as long as they don’t use their HRH designations on a formal basis.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could relinquish their titles
Even though Meghan and Prince Harry currently still have their titles, according to a recent report, the couple could be relinquishing them in the very near future. A source close to the royal family recently revealed that the two want to distance themselves from the royal family, and that “Hollywood and the monarchy do not mix.”
Certainly, Prince Harry and Meghan have used their titles in recent months for some professional projects, including Meghan choosing to be credited as the Duchess of Sussex for her recent voiceover project for Disney.
Still, a new promo video for an upcoming television special introduced the couple simply as “Harry and Meghan,” which lends weight to the speculation that the two could decide to leave their royal titles behind for good. Another royal insider in the same report claimed that the couple has “their own timeline and play by their own rules.
It would not surprise me if they announced they were relinquishing their titles.” If the couple does decide to change the course of history yet again and relinquish their titles, it would be a daring move, one that would put the final nail in the coffin of their time within the royal family.
