Ryder and Reeves have been in the business a long time but met at one event in the ‘80s when they were in the early days of their careers.
During a 2018 Today show interview, while promoting their movie Destination Wedding, they were asked about how they met and Ryder said she remembered the moment well.
“It was in the ‘80s,” she explained. “So he did … River’s Edge and Heathers were kind of like these two like controversial…”
“I was a big fan … but we met at the Independent Spirit Awards,” Ryder noted. Back in those days, the award show was far less elaborate and Hollywood than it is today.
The actor recalled, “They were like, ‘Who would be your dream to present with?’” and she said she hoped to present with Reeves.
The two have been friends ever since and continue to keep in touch, though their careers keep them each quite busy.
They share love and respect for each other
The two famous pals legitimately adore each other, too. During a 2018 interview with iHollywoodTV, Ryder and Reeves were asked about their friendship and what it’s been like to work together over the years.
Ryder had the opportunity to work with a lot of respected actors during her career, but said there’s “something very special” about her frequent co-star.
“I’ve been so lucky in my life that I’ve worked with so many great actors but there is something very, very special with Keanu,” Ryder explained. “I have so much love and respect for him and it really genuinely makes going to work and working an absolute pleasure.”
She recalled that even working in the heat and having to roll down a hill in Destination Wedding was bearable because of her co-star. “I can’t imagine doing it with anybody else but him,’ Ryder added.

During a 2018 interview with ET, Ryder was asked what makes her co-star “the best” and the actor didn’t hesitate, saying, “Pretty much everything. I’ve always — I mean, he’s one of my favorite people to work with, to be around …”
“I knew [Destination Wedding] would only work with someone who I really have strong chemistry with and I’ve always felt like we did,” she added.
Reeves also had plenty of wonderful things to say about Ryder. “We’re good friends, sense of humor, intelligence, mind, view of the world, beautiful heart, beautiful spirit, and a damn fine actress,” he said, when asked what he loves about working with her.
