How to Land a Spot on MTV’s ‘Are You the One?’
Are You the One? is an MTV reality television show that begs the question, if your perfect match was standing in front of you, would you know it? The dating experiment premiered in 2014 with Ryan Devlin as the host until Season 5. Actor Terrence J then took the reigns and has hosted the show since Season 6.
Now in its eighth season, AYTO made history by selecting sexually fluid or non-binary singles as the cast. What is Are You the One? about, and how can you apply to be a part of the show? Keep reading to find out!
The premise of ‘Are You the One?’
Eleven men and eleven women move into a beach house in Hawaii to find their perfect match. These matches, predetermined by producers using a matchmaking algorithm, must all succeed in finding each other for everyone to share a million-dollar prize.
Every episode, the couples participate in a challenge, and the winners receive a Getaway Date. While on the date, the others in the house vote the couple they believe has the potential to be a perfect match in the Truth Booth. The Truth Booth scans the couple and notifies everyone if they’re a perfect match or not.
If they are, the happy couple goes to the Honeymoon Suite. If they are not, they have to go back into the house, separate, and try again with someone else. The episode concludes with a match-up ceremony where the singles sit next to the person they believe could be their perfect match.
Then, beams light up, revealing how many perfect matches there are, but not who they are. If the contestants do not receive any beams, it is considered a blackout. After Season 3, the group loses $250,000 from their grand prize every time they fail to identify any new matches at the ceremony.
Seasons 1, 2, 6, and 7 won the million dollars, and Seasons 3 and 4 earned $750,000. Unfortunately, Season 5 failed to find their perfect matches, leaving Hawaii empty-handed.
How to apply to be on ‘Are You the One?’
You can apply to be on AYTO for if you identify as straight, sexually fluid, or non-binary. It is unclear if AYTO will have another Come One, Come All season; however, the form to submit the application is still available. Any individual that is over the age of 21 and open to dating all genders or non-binary singles can apply.
For the regular AYTO application, you have to answer questions, including where you’re from, your birthday, email, and phone number. You also have to submit your Instagram handle and tell Production about yourself and why you make a good fit for the show. The form also requires you to provide at least one photo of yourself, and you have the option to include two other pictures.
If you are applying as a sexually fluid or non-binary individual, you answer all the same questions plus a few more including if you are single and what being sexually fluid means to you. Also, the rules for the pictures you upload are more strict; they’re asking for two close up photos of your face and one full body shot.
These photos cannot come from Snapchat or have filters on them, and they request you do not wear any sunglasses in the pictures. In order to submit either application, you must agree to the terms of service which gives Production the rights to use the materials you submit “in any manner, in whole or in part, in any and all media now known or hereafter devised in perpetuity throughout the universe.”
