MTV’s Are You the One? features hopeful singles on a mission to find love — and to win big money. Unfortunately, a cast member from season 5 is coming forward to claim she was drugged and sexually assaulted while on the show. Will this affect the show going forward if there are plans for Are You the One? Season 9? Here’s what we know.

Cast member from ‘Are You the One?’ said she was drugged and assaulted

MTV is no stranger to controversy, and now it’s Are You the One? that’s in the spotlight. The show’s first season began in 2014, and season 5 happened in 2017. According to The Daily Beast, Gianna Hammer from season 5 said she was assaulted by a fellow contestant on the show.

Hammer, who is now 25 but was 21 when she was cast for the show, explained she was given prescription Zoloft by a doctor prior to going on the show, and a local medic gave her her meds while she was filming. One night, when Hammer was drinking, she got into an altercation with a fellow cast member. She explained production took her aside and tried to give her one of her medications so she could calm down. Hammer knew she shouldn’t take the meds while drinking, but production reassured her it was OK. She then blacked out.

The next morning, Hammer was told she got into bed with a male cast member and was eventually. pulled out of bed by the others in the house. She didn’t remember what happened.

“I was really just shaking,” she told the publication. “I didn’t know how to react to that situation. Immediately after that, I think we had a pause, and then their next question was, ‘Do you want him kicked out, kicked off the show?’”

The male cast member in question was then moved to a different part of the house, and production cut off alcohol to him and Hammer specifically.

Is ‘Are You the One?’ canceled? Will there be a season 9?

So, is Are You the One? Season 9 fated to never happen because of Hammer’s allegations? We’re not sure what’s slated to happen to the show at this point, but it looks like this could be the nail in the coffin for the show.

Season 8 ended in 2019, and there hasn’t been any news of a new season since then. According to Cinemaholic, if there was going to be a season 9, it likely would’ve premiered in June 2020. Given what Hammer alleges now, it might be in MTV’s best interest to do away with the show completely.

However, he coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may be why the show hasn’t continued yet. As Cinemaholic states, it’s received steady positive ratings since it aired. And a number of Are You the One? competitors go to compete on MTV’s The Challenge, one of MTV’s biggest hit originals. MTV’s weathered plenty of storms in the past with The Challenge and other shows, and they tend to keep the shows airing despite the controversies.

Are any Are You the One? couples still together now? It seems Ethan Diamond and Amber Lee from season 1 are now married. Since meeting in 2014, the two tied the knot and have become parents, In Touch Weekly reports.

While Ethan and Amber are the show’s biggest success story, Cali Trepp and Tomas Buenos from season 7 are still reportedly together. And Jenni Knapmiller and Curtis Hadzicki from season 2 also hit it off after production ended. E! News notes they’re still together today. Uche Nwosu and Clinton Moxam from season 6 were not perfect matches, but they connected after the reunion, too.

We’re curious as to what potentially happens with Are You the One? Season 9 (if there’s one in the works). We’ll have to wait and see how MTV responds to the current allegations.
