Hollywood studios often wrestle for ideal release dates for their biggest movie titles. Disney’s 20th Century Studios and Warner Bros. are currently doing just that with the release date for Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. They currently both have the same release date and both movies are trending with fans wondering which movie is more worth their money and time.

This year has a lot of big titles in the pipeline. The coronavirus (COVID-19) delayed many of these films from their original release dates. Moviegoing audiences are excited to see multiple of these films, but it does result in an overcrowded year of big titles. Many moviegoers will only see so many films in the theater within a given month.

Among those titles are a large number of sequels. Jackass Forever, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Legally Blonde 3, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World Dominion, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore are just some of them. Audiences are more likely to spend their hard-earned money on films that mark significant theatergoing experiences.

‘Avatar 2’ and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ are now competing and fans are debating which they should see

Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are both sequels with a release date of Dec. 16. This isn’t the typical summer slot that the major studios fight for, but it’s certainly during peak movie season. Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have very similar target audiences, making this a particularly intense game of Chicken.

Both movies trended on Twitter as a result of the release date announcements. Most fans are choosing one or the other based on several factors. Some folks are avoiding Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as a result of Amber Heard’s involvement, while others think it’s been too long since the first Avatar came out for them to care about a sequel.

Regardless of film preference, many Twitter users believe that Avatar 2 will obliterate Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at the box office. It’s James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel that will absolutely be the talk of the town.

Some audiences believe that this release date clash won’t last until December anyways. Avatar 2 suffered several release pushes, so it’s less likely to move once again. Some Twitter users are putting their money on Warner Bros. pushing Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom until 2023 for its big theatrical release.

Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could possibly also compete into the next year if neither of them moves release date. They both have the potential to earn nominations at awards shows for their technical qualities, such as visual effects.

Major studios don’t generally like to compete with each other regarding the same target demographic. Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have a lot on the line with being sequels. Avatar is planned out to a fifth installment, but Aquaman is up in the air. If it doesn’t perform well, it could be a serious hit to the potential franchise moving forward.
