‘Avengers: Endgame’ Deleted Scene Shows What Happened to Gamora
This year’s record-breaking superhero event featured many, many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among those was Gamora (Zoe Saldana), who had one of the most intriguing (and heartbreaking) arcs. Now, a deleted scene from Avengers: Endgame reveals her fate. Read on to know more — and naturally, spoilers for Endgame are abundant.
The character’s back story
Fans will recall first meeting Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy (released in 2014). When we meet her, she’s fighting with Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Rocket, and Groot over the Orb, which is later revealed to be the Power Stone. After escaping from prison with them, they all reluctantly team up in hopes of keeping the Power Stone away from Thanos (her adopted father), a Kree named Ronan, and her sister, Nebula.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which came out in 2017 but takes place very shortly after the event of the first), Gamora experiences even more growth. She forms a romantic relationship with Quill, reunites and reforms Nebula, and basically holds the crew together so that they can escape the clutches of Ego, the celestial.
Gamora and Nebula were an essential part of Infinity War
Given her ties to Thanos, Gamora played a big part in the story that plays out in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. In the former, Thanos takes her from the Guardians and blackmails her into showing him where the Soul Stone is located, before sacrificing her life to obtain it. This drives Quill to make a dangerous mistake, leading to Thanos’ eventual win and ‘the Snap.’
In Endgame, we don’t see the deceased Gamora. However, Nebula goes back in time to 2014 in order to retrieve the Power Stone before the Guardians got to it. Thanos discovers her and sends 2014 Nebula back to 2023 so she can bring him along. There, we see her fight with the two before killing 2014 Nebula and turning Gamora against Thanos.
Here’s the scene in question
After 2014 Gamora (hereafter referred to simply as Gamora) is reformed, she fights alongside Nebula, the Avengers, and everyone else in the second battle against Thanos. However, we never see her after her battle scenes. Fortunately, a new deleted scene of the Blu-ray extras reveals what happens to her.
Following Tony Stark’s demise, we see many of his friends, beginning with Hawkeye, take a knee in honor of the fallen hero. While they’re doing so, there’s a shot of Gamora, standing alone. She sees what’s happening, and leaves — allowing those who know him (or, at least, know of him) to have their moment.
What does this mean for Vol. 3?
After Stark’s funeral, the Guardians (and Thor) are shown getting ready to leave Earth. Quill has a mission in mind: Find this new Gamora, in hopes that she, too, will fall in love with him. So will this be the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
It’s hard to say at this point. It’s good to know that Gamora is out there, somewhere. We’re assuming she’ll find a way to head back into space, and that’s probably what Quill is counting on. However, little is known about the film at this point, only that it’s release date will be, at the earliest, in 2022. It hasn’t even begun pre-production, as reinstated director James Gunn is finishing Suicide Squad first. So there’s a long wait before we find out where Gamora went.
