Avril Lavigne Says ‘Bite Me’ Is ‘a Female Empowerment Song’
Avril Lavigne has always been amazing at creating pop-punk music. And her latest single, “Bite Me,” is no exception. The singer recently opened up about the meaning behind the song and its relation to the rest of her new album, Love Sux.
Avril Lavigne’s new single “Bite Me” is all about girl power
In an interview with The Forty-Five, Lavigne shared that “Bite Me” is “a female empowerment song.” She notes the tune is “about knowing your worth and what you deserve.” Lavigne adds, “It’s about saying goodbye to a toxic relationship.”
The lyrics reflect that, with lines describing a partner that regrets destroying their relationship. “Don’t act so innocent/this was no accident,” Lavigne sings. “You planned this in the end, and now it’s over.”
The catchy chorus continues on this empowerment theme, with the “I’m With You” artist singing, “Should’ve held on, should’ve treated me right // I gave you one chance, you don’t get it twice // Eh-oh, and we’ll be together never, so baby, you can bite me.”
The rest of the album follows this single’s lead. “The whole record is like that,” Lavigne explained. “It’s just guitar-driven and up-tempo, and a lot of it feels like the record I’ve wanted to make for a long time.”
She also spoke about the musicality of Love Sux. “I wanted to get electric guitars fully distorted, live drums and just make super-powerful, anthemic rock songs.”
Avril Lavigne teamed up with Travis Barker for her new album
In relation to her previous albums, like 2019’s Head Above Water, Lavigne explained that Love Sux has a more light-hearted feel.
“I make my albums, and they represent different points in my life,” the rocker said. “My last album was more serious. It was more in-depth than it was darker. This album is lighter and fun and a good time.”
The music video for “Bite Me” is just as fun as the song, with Lavigne and her band rocking out and destroying her ex’s place. There’s even a special appearance from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, who played drums on the track and helped Lavigne create the songs on her new album. Barker even distributed the album through his label, DTA.
“He was a huge help in making this record come to life,” the singer said. “We all went into the studio, and before we knew it, we had 30 songs. Nothing was forced at all, it just came together.”
Fan reactions to Avril Lavigne’s new music
Fans are loving the new music, especially the lead single, “Bite Me.” The return to her original pop-punk sound has many listeners reliving their younger days.
“No wonder Avril Lavigne’s Bite Me sounds nostalgic. It got that 2010’s vibes,” one fan tweeted. Another wrote, “In love with the 2007 vibes!”
Others commented that, in addition to sounding the same, Lavigne also looks the same as she did in the 2000s.
“I just don’t understand how Avril Lavigne looks exactly the same in the video for Bite Me as she did for Girlfriend 15 years ago,” one person tweeted. “She doesn’t age. Is she a witch?”
Lavigne’s new music has many fans feeling nostalgic for their younger days, but as the singer herself proves, you can rock out at any age!
