During the opening of B Positive Season 1, Episode 9 (titled “B Negative”), Jerry, one of Drew’s dialysis buddies, gets the call he’s been waiting for. Jerry learns that he will be getting a kidney. Drew and the rest of the dialysis patients decide to go out and celebrate the good news.

“I can’t believe I’m going to be able to go anywhere I want, eat and drink whatever I want, and actually make plans for the future,” says Jerry. When Samantha asks what those plans are, he says Tinder.

The others join in and share what they plan to do after their kidney transplants. Eli says he wants to sell his own line of salad dressing, Samantha wants to make partner at her firm, and Drew wants to take his daughter to Iceland.

Gina wants to do more with her life

Gina isn’t sure what her plans will be after she donates her kidney. She loves working with the elderly, but she wants to do more with her life. “I feel like I have more to offer,” says Gina. “I’ve been waiting for something amazing to happen to me, and maybe I need to stop waiting and do it myself.”

One idea Gina has is to become a travel writer. She’s interested in traveling around the world. She’s so serious about her next move that she asks Drew to review her resume. Norma pitches in by writing a letter of recommendation. However, the letter is more of a guilt trip than a recommendation.

In the letter Norma says she thought of herself and Gina as mother and daughter, but now that Gina is thinking of leaving, she has no one and will probably die alone at the assisted living facility.

Jerry’s surgery takes an unexpected turn

Jerry finds out his surgery went well, but there’s a problem. His doctor tells him his creatinine levels are high. According to the doctor, the levels are supposed to go down after a kidney transplant.

It’s later revealed that Jerry’s body rejected the kidney. He now has to go back on dialysis and back on the kidney donor list. Drew mentioned how Jerry waited seven years for a donor, and now his plans will once again be on hold.

Dew rebels and makes a reckless decision

In the next scene, Gideon notices an empty chair during the time Drew is supposed to be in dialysis. He decides to call Drew to see what’s going on. Much to his surprise, Drew is at the airport. He became so distraught over what happened with Jerry that he starts acting out.

Instead of waiting until after his kidney transplant, he decides to skip dialysis and go on a trip to Iceland with his daughter. This is part one of a two-part series, so we’ll have to wait for episode 10 to see what happens with Drew.

B Positive airs Thursdays on CBS at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
