All eyes are on Peter Weber as he embarks on his journey as The Bachelor — but he’s not the only star of the show we’re keeping up with. While Dean Unglert made his debut as a contestant on The Bachelorette, we’ve since seen him on multiple seasons of Bachelor in Paradise. And during the summer of 2019, we saw him fall deeply for Caelynn Miller-Keyes on the show, solidifying his status as a fan favorite.

Since then, Miller-Keyes and Unglert have been traveling the world via planes, trains, and his van, and they’ve documented all of it on social media. But their Switzerland trip took an unfortunate turn. A major accident almost cost Unglert his life and has kept him and his girlfriend in the U.K., though it seems he’s on the mend, as he just told his Instagram followers he’s finally getting the staples removed from his leg.

Dean Unglert detailed the horrific accident he had in Switzerland on his blog

Unglert loves adventure, and he’s been taking Miller-Keyes with him on his incredible journeys for months now. But it appears his luck finally ran out while skiing in Switzerland at the end of 2019.

“Other than the poor visibility, it was an awesome day skiing a mountain I only ever dreamed of as a kid,” Unglert detailed on his blog. He then explained that though he was tired, he kept pushing hard down the mountain — and that’s when disaster struck. “I skied hard into a rock that had hidden itself with a fresh dusting of snow. The second I hit the rock my left ski flew off and I immediately knew this wasn’t going to end well. My right ski, still attached to my foot, grabbed ahold of something while I was launched through the air and torqued my leg in a way it’s never been before.”

By the time Unglert realized something terrible happened to his hip, all other skiers had passed — and he panicked that he might not be able to find help before the sun went down. Thankfully, another skier saw Unglert attempting to wave down others on the mountain, and ski patrol came immediately.

He documented getting the staples out of his leg via his Instagram Story

Unglert noted on Instagram that while it took him an hour to flag someone down, he was “airborne and in surgery in less than an hour. a dislocated hip and fractured femur put 4 screws and a plate in my leg ….” And he then remained in the hospital for five days.

“I fly back to Los Angeles in about a week to meet with an orthopedic surgeon and begin my physical therapy,” Unglert wrote on his blog on Jan. 7. “I’m hoping to make a full recovery but have no idea what to expect. I’ve never had metal screws holding parts of my body together like this.” He then noted that this entire experience reminded him that he is, in fact, not invincible. “I am capable of seriously hurting myself and causing permanent damage, or worse,” he wrote.

Now, it looks like Unglert is on the mend. He shared an important update with his Instagram followers regarding his latest doctor visit.

“Today I am off to get the staples out of my leg,” he said on his Instagram Story. Unfortunately, this also meant he had to climb four stories of stairs to get where he needed to be — but he had Miller-Keyes on his side to help him. All in all, Unglert had 13 staples from the accident removed, and his doctor also helped him understand some leg anatomy.

He and Caelynn Miller-Keyes remain in the U.K. as he heals

As Unglert mentioned on his blog, he won’t be getting back to Los Angeles until mid-January. So for now, he and Miller-Keyes are stuck in the U.K., but they’re making the best of it.

Fans asked Miller-Keyes about her longer stay in Europe while Unglert heals, too.

“Can he fly right after surgery?” one follower asked.

“No but we’re making the most of it!” Miller-Keyes answered. And she posted a photo of herself on a train with the caption, “Training our way through Europe.” While they can’t hop on a plane, it looks like Unglert and Miller-Keyes are still doing their best to travel by land.

We’re hoping Unglert has a speedy, full recovery as he continues to explore Europe in the New Year!
