‘The Batman’: Zoë Kravitz ‘Interpreted’ Her Catwoman as Bisexual — Here’s Why
Catwoman has been portrayed in live-action numerous times in the past, but people will be talking about Zoë Kravitz’s take on Selina Kyle for quite some time. The actor made her live-action debut as the iconic anti-hero in The Batman. And although the film teases a romance between Kravitz’s character and Robert Pattinson’s DC hero, it also leaves the door open for other relationships.
And according to Kravitz, she “interpreted” one scene from the film to mean her Catwoman is bisexual. Could the DC Extended Universe deliver on that aspect of the character from the comics?
Selina Kyle has multiple connections in ‘The Batman’
Just watch a trailer for The Batman and you’ll pick up on the chemistry between Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight and Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman. And the film certainly builds on that, even if the duo has plenty of other things to focus on. It’s clear there’s more than platonic feelings between the two main characters. But The Batman seemingly hints at another connection between Selina Kyle and her roommate, Annika.
In the movie, Selina comes home and calls out for Annika, using the word “baby” to do so. The term of endearment left viewers wondering if there were romantic feelings between the two. Although the film never addresses that, someone recently asked Kravitz about the line. And she admitted she read it that way, too.
Zoë Kravitz ‘interpreted’ her Catwoman as bisexual
Following Selina Kyle’s moment with Annika, fans and critics began wondering if there was more between the two than the film explicitly stated. And Matt Galea at Pedestrian TV asked Zoë Kravitz if the scene served as a nod to Catwoman’s bisexuality.
“That’s definitely the way I interpreted that, that they had some kind of romantic relationship,” Kravitz admitted.
Galea also asked The Batman director Matt Reeves about the pair. According to Reeves, he initially viewed Selina’s affection for Annika as her taking in “strays.” But even if he didn’t intend it as a nod to Catwoman’s sexuality, he gets that viewers might see it that way:
“So I don’t think we meant to go directly in that way, but you can interpret it that way for sure. She has an intimacy with that character and it’s a tremendous and deep caring for that character, more so than a sexual thing, but there was meant to be quite an intimate relationship between them.”
Of course, interpretations don’t confirm that the DCEU’s Catwoman will see her sexuality explored on-screen. However, with sequels planned for The Batman and spinoff series on the horizon, it could happen. In fact, fans are hoping for it.
Catwoman is bisexual in DC Comics
Although Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle isn’t outwardly bisexual in the DCEU just yet, many fans are hoping she will be. That development would make this iteration of Catwoman accurate to her DC Comics counterpart.
Throughout her DC Comics history, writers have hinted at Catwoman’s bisexuality. Catwoman #39 eventually confirmed it, bringing more LGBTQ representation into DC canon.
Unfortunately, live-action takes on the character have yet to explore this aspect of her. With Kravitz likely to return as Catwoman, future DCEU projects could change that. Only time will tell if the franchise decides to go that route. It certainly seems like it would have fan support if it did.
The Batman is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
