The CW’s freshman series, Batwoman, is due for a fun episode. The last several chapters of Kate’s journey have been pretty dark, but season 1 episode 18 promises to infuse some levity into an otherwise gloomy storyline. Here’s a recap of what happened earlier in Gotham City and a preview of what to expect next from Kate and the Crew.

Previously on ‘Batwoman,’ a murderer is unmasked

Batwoman Season 1 Episode 17, titled “A Narrow Escape,” was full of juicy plot points. Radio personality Vesper Fairchild dropped the news that the bomber known as “The Detonator” had resurfaced in Gotham City after seven years away.

After two explosions that injured and killed innocent bystanders, Kate and Luke tracked down the person responsible. They discovered that the original “Detonator” was deceased, and the new assailant was a Crow agent operating as a copycat bomber. The motive? To cover his tracks, erasing any evidence and witnesses to a prior crime — the murder of Lucius Fox.

That revelation nearly drove Luke to kill the man, thereby avenging his father. But Kate talked her friend out of committing the unspeakable act of murder. She knows from experience that taking a life changes a person irrevocably. Batwoman still tastes the bitter shame of her crime of passion against August Cartwright.

In the end, Luke divulges to Kate that her cousin, Bruce Wayne, also broke the code once years ago. The Joker has been taken off the board permanently.

There’s a new brain in the Bat Cave

“I’m the last person Batwoman would ever confide in,” said Mary in “A Narrow Escape.” That may have been true before, but the tide has turned. After her underground clinic was rocked by an explosion, Mary confessed to Kate that she figured out her secret.

Now that Mary is in the loop of her stepsister’s extracurricular activities as Batwoman, she could be a valuable asset to the team. With Mary’s medical expertise and quick wit, it’s a wonder that Kate didn’t bring her aboard sooner.

Granted, the conflicting personalities of Mary and Luke have the potential to cause tension in the Bat Cave. They’ve already proven to have very different investigative methods, as shown in episode 15. With any luck, the odd pairing will inspire new ideas for Batwoman’s crime-fighting agenda, as well as loads of entertainment for the audience.

Next on ‘Batwoman’

“You feel that? I think you feel it. We’re going clubbing,” says Kate in the preview for Batwoman Season 1 Episode 18, “If You Believe in Me, I’ll Believe in You.” Although Luke seems less than enthused at the prospect of going out, the promo shows Mary mixing it up with Kate. Will she be Batwoman’s official wing-woman moving forward?

Much of the action in the upcoming episode takes place in, according to Luke, “The very high floor of a mob-infected night club.” The promo teases the return of Magpie, who, in the previous episode, was locked away safely in Arkham Asylum. It remains to be seen how the inmate escaped.

Another blast from the past that Kate will encounter is an old flame named Reagan. Will the twosome give romance another shot? With the violence that ensues in the episode, will there be time for canoodling? Fans will have to tune in to see how it all goes down. Batwoman airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
