The Beach Boys’ best known holiday song is ‘Little Saint Nick’

The Beach Boys cemented themselves at the crossroads of surfer rock and pop, becoming one of the most influential bands of all time. They released award-winning and chart-topping hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “God Only Knows,” even earning praise decades later.

Even though they were known for their summer sound, this band branched out to create original beloved holiday hits. Most notably, that’s their song “Little Saint Nick” which told the story of Santa Claus living way up north (where the air is cold).

Other artists debuted their adaptation of this holiday hit. Most recently, that included the California-based band Surfaces. Even The Muppets’ in-house band, The Electric Mayhem, performed their rendition for A Christmas Together.

The Beach Boys released their holiday album ‘The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album’ in 1964

“Little Saint Nick” was originally released in conjunction with the band’s holiday album, titled The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album. That track is by far the most popular from the release, with over 100 million plays on the streaming platform, Spotify.

The collection featured songs like “The Man With All the Toys,” “Merry Christmas, Baby,” and “We Three Kings of Orient Are,” each of which earned over a million Spotify plays. The band’s second most popular song from the album, according to Spotify streams, is their cover of “Frosty the Snowman.”

This wouldn’t be the only holiday album released by The Beach Boys, as this group collaborated for Ultimate Christmas. During a 1998 interview, Brian Wilson elaborated on the Beach Boys’ holiday renditions, as told by Genius. That includes the band’s version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”

“I guess there’s something very obvious when you hear the song,” Wilson said. “There’s a very definite influence of the Four Freshmen on the arrangement as well as the delivery, and obviously, we all look up and admire the style of the Four Freshmen and I feel this has been the greatest, one of the greater, vocal influences in the world today.”
